p.1
This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:
The childminder does not identify hazards in the home or garden. For example, she does not store all resources safely and the garden gate lock is broken. However, she supervises children closely to ensure they do not come to any harm. The childminder does not ensure her first-aid box has suitable contents to use with children to help with the treatment of any accidents or injuries. The childminder does not help children to understand the benefits of good hygiene practice to keep healthy. The childminder does not reflect on her practice or involve parents to help identify areas for development to improve children's health and safety.
p.1
It has the following strengths
Children form secure attachments to the childminder and develop strong friendships with other children. They settle well and enjoy their time at the setting. The childminder supports children's developing self-esteem. She gives them praise for their good attempts while they try to complete tasks and when they succeed. The childminder works with parents to share relevant information about the children.

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

help children to understand how to keep healthy use self-evaluation more effectively and involve parents to help identify areas for development that benefit children.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and evaluated an activity together. The inspector reviewed relevant documentation, including the childminder's self- evaluation document, evidence of qualifications, suitability of household members and a sample of policies and procedures. The inspector viewed areas of the childminder's home used for childminding. She spoke to children and parents during the inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement
The childminder does not accurately evaluate her practice or actively seek the views of parents. She has identified risks in her indoor environment but has not removed them. For example, the childminder stores some resources unsafely posing a risk to children and not secured the garden gate to prevent people entering or children leaving. Nevertheless, the childminder supervises children closely, which helps to keep them safe. Although the contents of the childminder's first-aid box are out of date, she knows how to manage minor accidents and emergencies. The childminder has completed training to update her knowledge of child protection. She understands the procedures to follow should she have a concern for a child. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder shares good information with the local school children attend, which helps her to complement children's learning. She provides a good range of activities and experiences to build on what children know and can do. Children choose from the range of resources. They enjoy being imaginative, for example, while they play with small-world figures. The childminder asks children questions during activities, which help them to think and express their ideas. The childminder helps children to build on their reading skills. For example, she encourages children to read printed words on posters.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement
The childminder does not support children to understand how to stay healthy. She does not remind them to wash their hands before they eat or explain why. In addition, children drink from each other's cups because the childminder does not help them to distinguish between their cups, which compromises children's good health. Nevertheless, the childminder creates a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Children are confident, sociable and behave well. They enjoy daily opportunities for exercise, such as playing in the garden.
