This provision is good
Staff and volunteers build warm, trusting relationships with children and families from the moment they start. They successfully build up children's self-esteem and help them to feel emotionally secure. Children develop good speaking and listening skills and respect for others through a range of well-planned activities. Staff purposefully arrange activities to encourage children to engage in conversations. Staff support children well to make a smooth transition to school. They share assessment information with the teachers and take children to visit their new schools. Parents are keen to say how well the staff care for their children and how much their children enjoy attending. The views of children, parents and staff are regularly gathered and used to evaluate and build on the good quality of the pre-school.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Ways to check and broaden the knowledge of volunteers are not monitored carefully enough. Information about children's development gathered from parents and other settings where children attend is not used to best effect in focusing on how to raise their achievements to the highest level.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

build further on the system for monitoring volunteers' practice and identify ways to help them keep their knowledge up to date make the most of what is known about individual children so specific areas of development can be targeted for really rapid progress.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint observation with the pre-school manager. The inspector held a meeting with the pre-school manager. She looked at relevant documentation, such as evidence of the suitability of staff working in the pre-school. The inspector took account of the views of children, parents and carers spoken to on the day and from information in the pre-school's own surveys.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff and volunteers are well deployed across the pre-school to keep children safe. They regularly attend training to refresh their understanding of child protection procedures and are briefed on wider safeguarding issues. The pre-school manager leads a stable and dedicated team of staff and volunteers. The volunteers are committed to the group and share their skills and talents. Staff meet weekly to discuss policies and plan interesting learning experiences for the children. Staff reflect on their practice and meet regularly with the manager to identify ways to develop their skills. These supervision meetings are also used effectively to monitor the progress of each child, identify any gaps in their learning and plan to ensure the gaps close rapidly.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Staff make good use of the knowledge gained from their qualifications and training to build on their good quality teaching. For instance, recent training improved their understanding of the range of small- and large-muscle skills needed before children can write. Therefore, in addition to making marks using different tools and media, staff provide activities, such as digging with spades in the garden and encouraging children to roll dough between their thumb and index finger. Staff use their good knowledge of children's interests and abilities to plan and provide engaging and challenging activities.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Staff are positive role models and offer meaningful praise to children as they play. They successfully raise children's confidence and motivate them to learn. Staff and children enthusiastically exercise to music at the beginning of the morning and continue to be physically active throughout the day. Children learn about healthy lifestyles and how healthy eating helps them to grow and develop. Children behave well. They demonstrate a good awareness of how to work safely when using knives to cut fruit for snack, carrying chairs and using the climbing apparatus.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children make good progress from their starting points and develop the key skills needed for future learning. They are confident and keen to learn, working well on their own and in groups. They keenly help each other to carry large items, such as buckets of water, and know to wait for their turn to roll the dice when playing games. Children enjoy a range of good routine and play opportunities to recognise numerals and use numbers for a purpose. On arrival, they confidently place their name card next to the successive numeral on the wall register. While playing games, such as hopscotch, children count the spots on the dice and move to the mat with the corresponding numeral.
