Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not hold a current paediatric first-aid qualification. She is not qualified to respond to children's accidents and injuries or to administer first aid.  The childminder's assessments of children's learning do not identify where children are at risk of falling behind.  The childminder does not achieve successful partnership working with all parents. She does not exchange in-depth information with them about children's progress so that they can work together to support children's ongoing development.  The childminder knows her strengths and weaknesses, however, she does not take prompt and effective action to address identified weaknesses in provision.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children behave well and learn to value others. They develop good social skills, such as taking turns, and they listen to and take account of others' suggestions during play.  Children build a secure bond with the childminder. She is kind, caring and responds well to their needs. Children become confident knowing they are safe and secure.  Children enjoy playing outdoors. The childminder provides age-appropriate resources to excite children and stimulate their learning. She joins in with their play and supports them to follow their interests.  The childminder supports children's language skills as she talks to them throughout the day. She provides ideas to extend their play and gives them space and time to explore.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 obtain a current paediatric first-aid qualification and ensure this is maintained at all times 24/06/2017

p.2

Due Date

 complete ongoing assessments of children's capabilities so that areas where children are slower to develop are targeted with effective interventions at the earliest opportunity 24/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

 improve partnership working with parents so that children benefit from a consistent and collaborative approach to support their learning in the setting and at home. 24/08/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 implement a robust improvement plan and ensure that a concerted effort is made to address identified weaknesses in practice in a timely manner.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of all persons living and working on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has failed to maintain a current paediatric first-aid qualification. Her current qualification has recently expired. However, she has taken action to book on to another training course. She keeps up to date with first-aid guidance and watches videos that she receives from a paediatric first-aid training provider. The childminder understands her responsibilities to provide high-quality learning and care to children. However, she does not reflect on her previous learning and childcare qualification. Where weaknesses in provision arise, she does not take prompt action to make the necessary improvements. Safeguarding is effective. She knows the procedures she must follow to report any concerns she has that a child may be at risk of harm.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder's assessments of children's progress are not robust. She is not clear on children's level of progress from entry or identifying where children begin to fall behind in their learning. Gaps in children's learning are not addressed at the earliest opportunity to help them quickly catch up. However, the childminder provides appropriate support to help children develop their language skills and use of vocabulary. Children are confident to communicate and ask simple questions. The childminder shares information with parents about children's day-to-day learning. However, she does not engage all parents to work collaboratively with her in order to promote children's good progress. Children nevertheless enjoy their time in the setting. The childminder interacts with them throughout the day. She follows children's interests as they play and provides a suitable range of opportunities to engage them and motivate them to learn.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder is not rigorous when promoting children's welfare and has failed to ensure that she maintains a first-aid qualification. However, she makes regular checks of her premises to ensure any risks to children are minimised. Those children who prefer to play outdoors have plenty of opportunities to learn in the fresh air. Children are keen to learn new skills as they blow bubbles in the garden. They jump to catch them and chase after them, which promotes their physical development. Children learn how to use a knife safely when cutting some pretend food, which promotes their independence. The childminder promotes healthy eating and offers children fruit for snack. They begin to develop an understanding of how to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children do not make good enough progress. They develop basic skills, for example, they listen to the childminder and are eager to join in with what she provides. However, children do not show consistently good rates of progress in all areas, and are not best prepared for the challenges of their future learning, such as school.
