Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Good 2

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The organisation and management of the setting are not fully robust. The childminder does not check that all required records are accurately maintained and readily available for inspection.  The childminder does not evaluate her provision often enough. This does not help her identify where improvements are needed to ensure high-quality provision is consistently maintained.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder uses her knowledge and training to teach children well. She works closely with her assistant to offer a wide range of activities that helps children to make good progress.  Children develop positive relationships with the childminder, her assistant and each other. They enjoy spending time at the setting and are happy, self-motivated and well behaved.  The playroom is welcoming and well resourced. Children play with a good variety of natural, open-ended resources that they can use in different ways. This helps to stimulate their imaginations.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure all records are easily accessible and available for inspection, particularly records to verify that public liability insurance is maintained and the assistant is trained in paediatric first aid 02/06/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure a written record is kept of any complaints and their outcome. 02/06/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen self-evaluation to help identify areas for improvement and maintain good quality provision and outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and her assistant. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children and parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder and her assistant attend safeguarding training to ensure they know how to respond to any child protection concerns. They keep children safe, for instance, through effective risk assessment and appropriate supervision. However, management of the setting is variable. The childminder does not consistently record information about all complaints. She could not locate records to verify she maintains public liability insurance and her assistant holds an appropriate qualification in first aid. The childminder monitors children's learning well. She oversees the work of her assistant and shares her learning from training to help improve outcomes for children. Some self-evaluation takes place, however, this lacks rigour and does not help the childminder to identify areas requiring improvement.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder accurately assesses children's skills and clearly identifies their next steps in learning. She gives priority to children learning through play and engaging in fun activities initiated by themselves. The childminder makes sure children have a range of opportunities to make marks in order to help develop their early writing skills. She communicates well with the children and encourages them to find their own solutions to simple problems. Parents speak positively about the good progress children make. They report that they particularly like the daily diaries as they help them to see what their child is learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

Some gaps in leadership and management mean children's safety and welfare are not promoted as well as possible. Nevertheless, children are content and comfortable in the childminder's care. They play cooperatively with one another and their behaviour is good. Children show growing independence. They learn about values, such as using good manners and waiting patiently for their turn. The childminder keeps appropriate records about children's accidents. She promotes hygiene routines and encourages children to be active and healthy.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are keen and confident learners and make good progress during their time with the childminder. They are well prepared for their move to school. Children practise letter sounds and learn to recognise simple words. They enjoy nature walks, trips to the farm and walking the childminder's dogs. These activities help to promote their awareness of the world around them.
