p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder uses her observations and discussions with children to help her identify and close any gaps in their learning swiftly. Children make good progress in their learning from their starting points.  The childminder gives children opportunities to socialise with others. They attend local toddler groups where they learn to share and take turns, mix with others and develop friendships.  The childminder effectively uses opportunities to promote children's communication and language, mathematical and literacy skills. This helps them to acquire the key skills ready for their next stage in learning.  Children are independent and enjoy helping with age-appropriate tasks. For example, they set spoons at the table ready for lunch.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not involve parents fully enough in sharing information about children's starting points on entry.  Occasionally, the childminder plans activities that do not encourage children to use their own ideas, creativity or thinking skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support parents more effectively to share information about what children already know and can do when they first start  review planned activities, particularly so that children have more opportunities to use their own ideas, creativity and thinking skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities, indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder regularly updates her knowledge and skills. She is clear about what she should do if she has any concerns about a child in her care. The childminder is also aware of how to identify if children are at risk from extreme behaviour or views. Safety equipment is used effectively to stop the youngest children from accessing certain parts of the family home. This helps to promote their safety and welfare. Parents speak highly of the childminder, saying how caring and thoughtful she is and how much their children enjoy attending.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder skilfully involves herself in children's play. For example, she interacts well with them, asking simple questions and extending their vocabulary by adding new words as they play. Children make good progress in their mathematical development. They have lots of opportunities to count and compare sizes and colours. The childminder effectively teaches skills in small steps, encouraging children to successfully master a task. For example, the childminder reminds children to add salt to break through the ice and rescue the animal figures. The childminder praises children frequently, which raises their confidence effectively and encourages them to keep trying.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are inquisitive and eagerly explore their surroundings, selecting activities and resources. The supportive childminder encourages children to share resources fairly and play amicably together. She praises children to raise their self-esteem. They are physically active and enjoy jumping and rolling. The childminder offers daily opportunities for outdoor play and takes children to the local parks and toddler groups. She provides healthy snacks and ensures that good hygiene practices are followed, to promote children's good health. The childminder checks all aspects of her home and garden every day to help ensure it is safe and secure.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are safe, secure and happy. Young children frequently imitate words and make sounds in response to the childminder's warm interactions. They select objects by name and can follow simple instructions. Children listen to stories with interest and excitedly talk about the picture. This helps to develop their enjoyment of books and builds on their early reading skills. Children are emotionally secure with the childminder and other children. They are sociable and play very well together. Children gain the skills and attitudes they require for their future move on to school.
