p.1

This provision is good

 Since the last inspection the childminder has been very proactive in addressing previous issues. She has evaluated her provision and has clear targets in place.  Parents are very positive about the quality of care and learning the childminder provides. They are given regular summaries of their child's development. This helps them further support their child's learning at home.  The childminder has high expectations for children's behaviour. She offers guidance and reassurance to children and they adhere to house rules.  Children gain a good understanding of leading a healthy lifestyle. They carry out effective hygiene procedures, such as washing their hands before eating food.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to extend children's mathematical learning throughout their activities.  The initial information gathered from parents about children is not sharply focused enough to identify what they can already do when they first start.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide opportunities for children to extend their mathematical learning throughout play and activities  expand on the information gathered from parents to identify what children can already do when they first start.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of those living in the household.  The inspector spoke to the children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a robust and up-to-date understanding of the safeguarding and welfare requirements and all the changes in government guidance. She carries out safety checks around her home and holds appropriate qualifications, such as first aid, to help ensure children are safe in her care at all times. The childminder attends additional training and gains support from other local authority quality workers to help improve her knowledge and raise the quality of her provision. She has made good connections with other childminders and local support groups. This enables her to access additional information, exchange ideas and give support to others.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder's teaching is good. Children enjoy a range of activities which, overall, helps challenge their learning and development. The childminder has a secure understanding of how children learn and provides a good range of exciting experiences for them. She observes and assesses children's progress and plans activities according to their stages of development and interests. For example, children thoroughly enjoy imaginative play as they take on the role of a shopkeeper. The childminder interacts well with children and demonstrates the use of first-aid equipment. She bandages up children's knees during role play and takes their temperatures. The childminder gives great support in extending children's speech and understanding. She asks how and why questions, gives children time to respond and introduces additional vocabulary during conversations.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder creates a warm, friendly welcoming environment for children. She is calm and gentle and they feel secure in her care, approaching her easily to make their needs known. This demonstrates that their emotional needs are successfully met. Children are physically active and thoroughly enjoy the outdoors. They attend many places of interest in their community, such as woodlands and play centres, and access public transport. This helps give children a good understanding of the world around them and the different jobs that people do, such as bus and train drivers.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and motivated to learn. They display a positive attitude to new experiences and show high levels of concentration. Early literacy skills are well promoted. For example, children make marks and they happily take part in reading books, looking at pictures and discussing what is happening in stories. Children make good progress in their learning and develop the key skills needed in readiness for school.
