This provision is good

 Children are confident, secure, safe and happy in the homely environment. They settle quickly and enjoy being with the childminder.  The childminder is experienced and has a very good understanding of how children learn. She interacts well with them, using skilful questioning to help extend their speaking and listening skills.  Partnerships with parents are good. Positive feedback from parents demonstrates their high regard for the service the childminder offers. The childminder regularly seeks parents' views. This helps her to reflect on her practice and to identify areas for improvement.  The childminder is proactive in keeping her skills and knowledge up to date and takes part in continued professional development.  Children enjoy regular outings and outdoor play. They have good opportunities to learn about nature and the wider world.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasions, the childminder does not fully exploit activities to successfully meet the individual learning needs of children to an outstanding level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 sharpen further the focus of activities so that individual children's learning needs are met and they achieve as much as possible in all areas of learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke with the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector sampled children's learning records and other relevant documentation.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from written feedback.  The inspector observed activities indoors and in the garden.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and the suitability of adults living and working on the premises.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder fully understands her role to protect children and how to report any concerns she may have. She implements a wide range of policies to keep children safe and run the provision well. The childminder ensures that mandatory training is completed by herself and her assistants and she supervises their practice well. She is a very reflective practitioner and shows a strong commitment to continuing to improve her practice. For example, she has recently developed the information she collects about children when they first start with her. This has helped her to assess their progress more effectively and quickly identify any gaps in their learning. The childminder regularly seeks the opinions of parents to help her reflect on and evaluate her practice. She uses this information to improve the quality of her provision.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder observes children and uses this information to plan their next steps in learning. She uses her teaching skills very well to encourage children's communication and language development. For example, children thoroughly enjoy making a worm garden using edible ingredients. They giggle as they sing a song about worms as they measure and mix the ingredients, following a pictorial recipe card. This also helps to support their mathematical development and early literacy skills. The childminder uses these opportunities to introduce books to children. They are enthusiastic as the childminder talks about the different insects and they compare the differences between them.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children receive regular praise and encouragement which helps to build their confidence and self-esteem. The childminder is an excellent role model. She gently reminds children to share and take turns. She helps them work through minor disagreements so they understand about acceptable behaviour. This supports them to play collaboratively. The childminder works very well with other professionals involved in children's development to ensure a consistent and shared approach to their learning. Children walk daily to and from school and attend local facilities. This ensures they get fresh air and exercise while helping to develop their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are prepared well for a successful move to school. They are independent and manage their own personal care needs well. They are confident and clear speakers who eagerly share their thoughts. For example, they are excited as they talk about the tea party they are having and what they will have to eat. All children make good progress from their starting points.
