This provision is good

 Children enjoy learning through play and become engrossed in activities of their choice. The childminder holds useful conversations with children to help their play become more purposeful.  The childminder models clear speaking and careful listening. Children listen attentively and speak with growing confidence.  Activities assist physical development well. Children take risks and assess levels of safety for themselves.  The childminder knows exactly what each child can do and what interests them. She regularly reviews children's progress and uses this information to meet individual needs. Children make good progress.  Children have excellent relationships with the childminder and even very young children learn to cooperate and to tolerate one another.  The childminder constantly seeks out new ideas and developments in childcare from professionals to enhance her teaching and improve outcomes for children.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder works closely with parents to address the children's learning and care needs. Parents value the level of attention she pays.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always seize chances to encourage children's understanding fully to help them explore their ideas further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 take every opportunity to deepen children's understanding and encourage them to explore their own ideas fully.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities in the childminder's setting, and the impact her teaching has on children's development.  The inspector spoke with the childminder throughout the inspection.  The inspector carried out an observation with the childminder during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents and children through speaking with them and looking at questionnaires.  The inspector looked at evidence of self-evaluation, risk assessments, safety records, policies and procedures, and a range of other relevant documentation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of all areas of learning and how young children learn. She provides a range of practical and creative activities that stimulate children's curiosity. She lets children try to work things out for themselves. For example, a very young child tries to work out how to wind in a line on a fishing rod. Her own training and development have a positive impact on improving the quality of her teaching. The childminder successfully uses methods learnt to encourage clearer speech and language. Parents fully appreciate her practices. The childminder shares children's progress with parents. She has clear safety procedures, and follows these closely to promote children's safety. She is alert to any signs that children may be at risk of harm and knows how to report any concerns. Safeguarding is effective.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder encourages children to develop skills in manipulating and exploring materials from a very early age. For example, a child increases control of handling food utensils through filling containers of toy vehicles with dry cereal. Children practise mathematical skills. They count and compare sizes of items. The childminder makes good use of naturally occurring opportunities. For example, children learn the names of birds that land in the garden and watch rainfall to observe its intensity. The childminder uses assessment well to identify where children need to catch up. She adjusts teaching to meet their individual needs.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has a warm and welcoming rapport with the children so they listen attentively and like responding to her. She models patience and tolerance at all times. Regular and meaningful praise ensures that children feel good about themselves and are confident to have a go at activities. Children behave well because they know what is expected of them and are happy in their environment. The childminder works with parents to promote independence in personal care and healthy lifestyles.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in all areas of learning. They play together well and respect one another's differences. Children enjoy a challenge and become motivated to learn. They experience a wide range of books through regular visits to the library. Children develop early writing and number skills to prepare them for their next stage in education.
