This provision is good

 Children are happy and enjoy their time in the childminder's care. The childminder promotes children's confidence and self-awareness, helping them to be successful learners. Children enjoy making choices about what they would like to play with.  The childminder provides a broad range of interesting activities that helps children to make good progress in their learning and development. This ensures children are well prepared to move on to their next phase in learning and school.  Observation, planning and assessment are good. The childminder uses her good knowledge of children's interests and how they learn and develop to enthuse, engage and motivate children.  The childminder places a strong focus on helping children to acquire communication and language skills, and on supporting their physical and social development. This provides children with the foundations for future learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently promote opportunities for children to use numbers and counting in their play.  The childminder does not focus sharply enough on her professional development to raise the quality of her provision and outcomes for children to the highest level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 support children more consistently to use numbers and counting in their play  extend the focus on professional development in order to raise the good quality teaching and outcomes for children to the next level.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at a sample of relevant documentation with regard to children's welfare and safety, including evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector talked to the childminder about her self-evaluation and plans for improvement.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures to follow in the event of a child protection concern. She recognises the importance of implementing her policy consistently and in a timely way to keep children safe. The childminder makes sure she minimises risks to children on the premises and on outings. The childminder is well qualified and experienced and children benefit from this. She checks the progress children make and is able to quickly identify where they are not making the expected progress. The childminder plans effectively, using her observations of children, so that she can narrow any gaps in their learning. This has a positive impact on children's progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has good teaching skills and high expectations of all children. She engages children well in their chosen play and encourages them to explore their ideas and develop their thinking. The childminder models language well; she asks open-ended questions and introduces new vocabulary. Children concentrate very well for their age on chosen activities, such as fitting shapes into spaces on a puzzle board and putting the train track together. Children enjoy their learning and develop independence as they explore the environment. The childminder maintains a learning journal for each child, which shows their enjoyment and achievements. Parents are kept well informed about their children's progress and next steps in learning. They are encouraged to share information about their child's learning and development at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's health and physical development are fostered well. A good focus is placed on spending time outdoors and children enjoy opportunities to play in the garden. They visit a local park where they can play on a range of equipment to refine their physical skills and confidence. Children's behaviour is good and they learn how to keep themselves safe. The childminder is a good role model and is responsive to children's needs. Gentle reminders about how to use equipment and how to relate to others help children to manage their feelings and emotions as they grow. This supports children's emotional well-being successfully.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enjoy learning and make good progress. Their early literacy skills and personal care skills are promoted successfully. Children learn about their local community on outings and begin to understand about the needs of others. Younger children learn to share and take turns and they become emotionally well prepared for their next stage in learning.
