This provision is good

 Staff are well qualified and very experienced. They use their knowledge of children's individual learning needs, and their understanding of how children learn, to plan a wide range of interesting activities.  Children are safe, happy and settled. Staff are very good role models who offer lots of positive praise and encouragement. Children are learning to share, take turns, listen and follow instruction.  The staff team effectively engages with parents to support children's learning in the pre-school and at home. Staff communicate regularly with other settings that children attend. This helps to ensure that everyone is knowledgeable about how to support children's ongoing progress.  Children who require additional help are well supported. Staff liaise effectively with other professionals and children benefit from the inclusive educational programme.  The manager and staff team use self-evaluation as an ongoing tool to help staff,

children and parents reflect upon areas that can be improved.

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The manager does not yet use information as well as possible to check the progress made by different groups of children.  Opportunities for children to explore a greater range of natural objects are not yet maximised.

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the existing monitoring systems to make comparisons of the progress made by different groups of children, in order to help all children progress to the highest level  provide children with more opportunities to explore a greater range of natural resources.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector spoke with staff and children during the inspection.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the manager and provider. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the pre-school.  The inspector spoke to a few parents during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff have a very good understanding of what they need to do if they have concerns about a child. Children's safety is promoted well. The pre-school is well maintained and risk assessments are in place. The manager is passionate and has high expectations of staff and children. She leads a team that is well qualified and has a range of experiences working within early years. Staff are supported through supervision sessions and further training to develop their practice. The manager and staff team use additional funding well to tailor activities to children's individual needs and interests and to extend their learning further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff are passionate about children's learning and development, using a range of effective teaching techniques. This means children are highly motivated, eager to learn and fully engaged, demonstrating high levels of perseverance and concentration. Staff successfully provide children with opportunities to use their imagination during creative activities. For example, they explore using a range of materials independently. Children demonstrate good coordination and control as they use tools to break up blocks of ice when looking for hidden treasure. Staff are skilled in using questions to prompt children to think for themselves. Their communication and language skills are well supported as staff engage them in meaningful conversations and introduce new vocabulary.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children and parents receive a very warm welcome when they arrive at the pre-school. Staff promote an inclusive environment where all children are valued as unique individuals. This helps them settle and form strong bonds. Staff provide good opportunities to support children's health and physical development. Many of the children enjoy being outdoors exploring the stimulating environment. Children form close friendships, learn to share and show respect for others. Staff foster children's independence well. They are given the time to direct their own learning successfully. As a result, children are eager and curious to explore the experiences offered and confidently make independent choices in their play. All children behave well.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points. They develop good literacy skills and enjoy books at story time. Children also learn to count and develop mathematical ideas of quantity as they measure out the ingredients needed when making play dough. They develop their social, communication and physical skills, securing the skills they need for their future learning and eventual move to school.
