This provision is good

 The childminder has a secure understanding of her responsibilities to implement policies and procedures, in order to support the welfare of the children.  The childminder regularly observes and assesses the children at play. She uses her notes to plan purposeful experiences that enable the children to develop and learn new skills, overall. The children progress well from when they start.  The childminder works very well with parents to support consistency of care for children. She provides parents with regular updates of their children's general well- being and progress which they can use at home to support their child's development further.  The childminder attends training courses to update her knowledge of childcare which has a good impact on the quality of care children receive.  Children behave well. They receive regular support and opportunities to help them develop friendships with other children beyond the setting.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently make the best use of all opportunities to support young children's understanding of simple measurements and mathematical vocabulary.  At times the childminder does not fully support children to develop their understanding of the importance of good hygiene practices.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make the most of all opportunities to enhance children's early understanding of numbers and mathematical vocabulary  explore ways to further help develop children's understanding of healthy practices.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder at appropriate times.  The inspector observed the interactions between the childminder and children as they engaged in activities.  The inspector viewed all areas of the childminder's home that are used for childminding.  The inspector looked at a sample of documents, such as policies, children's records, the childminder's qualification certificates and her self-evaluation form.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder carries out regular risk assessments indoors and outdoors to reduce potential hazards to children. She has a secure knowledge of child protection issues and knows the procedures to follow to report any safeguarding concerns. The childminder holds a current paediatric first-aid certificate and keeps a fully stocked first-aid box so that she can give the appropriate care if a child sustains an injury. The childminder keeps and maintains certain documents for the safe management of the children. She has addressed the recommendation set at the previous inspection. This had led to improvements in the quality of learning she provides for children. The system for evaluating what works and needs to improve is developing well.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder gathers relevant information from parents before their children are placed in her care to have a good knowledge of their individual needs. In addition, the childminder takes account of parent's knowledge of their child to build on their existing abilities. The childminder provides good opportunities to help develop young children's communication and language skills. For example, she plays alongside the children and responds to their comments using simple and repeated language. Young children are able to string together four to five word sentences. Children have regular opportunities to help develop their creative skills. For example, they learn to make marks with their fingers, crayons and paint brushes. They also enjoy exploring the texture of sand and making sandcastles and balls.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is caring, affectionate and attentive to the children's individual needs. Children relate well to the childminder and enjoy her company. They learn how to keep themselves safe. The childminder's efficient daily routines enable children to play in a clean environment. Young children rest and sleep according to their needs. The childminder takes account of children's dietary needs when planning their meals and provides nutritious foods that help them to eat healthily. Children have daily opportunities to enjoy fresh air and extend their physical skills.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and they are prepared for the next stage in their development. They are learning to be independent. For example, young children are developing an ability to make choices of what to play with and where. They are also keen to do things for themselves, such as dressing and undressing. Children enjoy exploring books and listening to stories.
