This provision is good

 The childminder monitors children's learning and they make good progress. Overall, she supports and extends children's learning through well-thought-out activities.  Children have many opportunities to develop their independence. For example, they engage in activities which invite them to try new things and are confident in their play.  The childminder shares warm relationships with the children and meets their physical and emotional needs well. Children show they feel safe in the childminder's care. For example, they enjoy the comfort of a cuddle and have a familiar routine.  The childminder adapts her use of language well during interactions and activities for children, such as for those of different ages and abilities, to enhance their learning.  Children develop a good understanding of positive behaviour. For example, they learn how to share and be patient during play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not provide children with a broader range of opportunities to independently extend their early writing skills.  The childminder does not pursue opportunities to gain further information from parents in order to support children's developmental goals and to ensure more continuity in learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase the use of opportunities that enable children to make choices in order to explore further their early writing skills  encourage parents to provide detailed information in order to support shared and more consistent learning for their children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities indoors and outdoors.  The inspector talked with the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's suitability.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder in relation to observations of the children's play, learning and progress.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of the signs that may indicate a child is at risk of harm. She ensures her knowledge is regularly refreshed to help her understand further risks for children and the procedures to follow in the event of a concern. The childminder reflects on the success of her practice and acts to improve her skills and outcomes for children, for instance, by having regular discussions with other childcare professionals. She has plans to enhance the outdoor area to introduce learning about planting. The childminder identifies potential risks in the environment and addresses these to help children play in safety.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses effective teaching skills to support children well in their ongoing development. She shows a strong ability to adapt her teaching in order to meet the developmental stages of the children. For example, very young children develop their first words as they learn to copy sounds made by the childminder during singing. This is repeated and extended throughout the game and causes great pleasure. The childminder understands what children know and how she can further support their progress and development. For example, she teaches children about the wider world by combining learning about and playing with animals with a visit to a local farm. In general, the childminder makes regular assessments of children's play and achievements and shares these with their parents.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and settled in the childminder's home. She gives the children lots of praise and encouragement, which helps to develop their self-esteem and confidence. Children are encouraged to be polite and behave well. Children develop a growing sense of their own place in the world. For example, they engage in discussions about outings with family and are provided with resources which reflect the differences in people. Children learn about healthy lifestyles. For example, they enjoy healthy snacks and are given daily opportunities to spend lengths of time playing outdoors.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children play cooperatively together and learn to communicate their needs, ideas and views from a very young age. They explore resources to support their play ideas and solve problems effectively with the help of the childminder. For example, children choose items for the water tray and learn to select the right ones they need from a selection of toys. Older children are well prepared for their next stage of education and their move on to school. For example, they attend playgroups with the childminder and develop their social skills successfully.
