This provision is good

 The childminder is very skilful in teaching children how to say safe. For example, children know that they must wait on the safe step before they leave the premises.  Self-evaluation is effective. The childminder reflects well on her provision and researches information to successfully help extend the learning opportunities for children. For example, she has increased the range of scientific, mathematical and creative activities for children.  The childminder has a wealth of experience which she uses well in her observation, assessment and planning of children's development. Children make good progress from their starting points and develop important skills for school.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder provides activities for children to do at home that involve parents and encourage children's learning further.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes gives children a lot of information and asks a number of questions without giving them sufficient time to think and answer for themselves.  The childminder does not have consistently effective methods of communication with other providers who share the care of children, in order to further support their learning and development.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve teaching skills in order to enable children to have more time to process information and answer before moving on to the next subject  develop consistent procedures to share information with other settings that children attend, in order to extend learning support and continuity of care.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children during their indoor activities.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder.  The inspector read feedback from parents.  The inspector took account of the childminder's self-evaluation and assessment methods.  The inspector checked insurance and qualification certificates.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge of the procedures that enable her to safeguard children's welfare. She organises child protection training for other providers and parents to raise their awareness and benefit a wider range of children. The childminder supervises her assistant when he is available to help, such as when they take children on outings in the school holidays. She shares relevant information with her assistant about her childcare practice and procedures. Since the last inspection, the childminder has improved the organisation of her resources to give children a wider choice in their play. She has increased the indoor opportunities for children to learn about print, in order to extend support in their literacy development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has a particular interest in teaching children in the outdoor environment. For example, children learn about letters and numbers on road signs, house doors and posters. Children develop very good levels of concentration, such as when they carefully paint figures on stones. The childminder uses mathematical language well in play to help children consider size, shape and to make comparisons. Creative play activities include collage and crafts that help develop children's physical skills well. For instance, children learn to use scissors with competence. The childminder teaches children early literacy skills, such as to recognise and write letters in their name.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder provides unique opportunities to develop children's extremely good understanding and awareness of their local community. For example, they develop excellent social skills during their visits to elderly people and toddler groups. Children show immense care and respect for others and behave extremely well. They show extreme pride as they look at their photographs and recall frequent litter picking in their special florescent jackets. The childminder successfully engages parents and children in village fundraising events. Children benefit from these and are exceptionally pleased with their new park equipment. They confidently describe what their favourite thing is and how much they like to climb and slide.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn and understand important values with the childminder, such as honesty and consideration. They develop high levels of self-esteem, being very proud of their achievements. Children enjoy their interesting activities and are keen to help. For example, they eagerly prepare the ground to sow and grow vegetables, which helps to encourage a good understanding of healthy foods.
