This provision is good

 The childminder assesses children's development well to monitor and promote their learning effectively. Children make good progress.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder works effectively to involve parents in their children's learning. For example, she provides parents with regular updates of children's progress and encourages them to share information about what their children are learning at home.  The childminder helps children to develop healthy lifestyles. For example, she provides nutritious meals, lots of outdoor play when they choose and meets their care routines consistently to ensure they are happy and well rested.  The childminder values professional development to improve her teaching qualities further and to support children's learning. For example, she introduced positive strategies to encourage good behaviour without upsetting or hindering children's play.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not consistently exchange detailed information with the other settings children attend to help complement children's development as well as possible.  The childminder does not regularly encourage children to learn about technology.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

She also discussed the effectiveness of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector observed the management of children's care routines.  The inspector looked at children's assessment records.  The inspector sampled the childminder's documentation and discussed her knowledge of the requirements of the early years foundation stage.  The inspector took account of parents' views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder keeps up to date with current safeguarding practices and policy to maintain her good understanding of how to protect children's welfare. For example, she has learnt more about the possible signs and symptoms that a child is at risk of being influenced or harmed by extreme views or behaviour. The childminder builds close relationships with parents from the start to ensure she meets children's needs consistently. She reflects well on her provision and makes ongoing improvements to maintain the good quality care and learning she provides.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses her good teaching skills to engage children well in their play and to help them make good progress. She observes them closely and sensitively joins in their play to keep them interested in learning. For example, she encourages children to think and answer her questions while they lead their own imaginative play. The childminder extends their learning further by introducing new words to build their vocabulary and mathematical language. She supports children well in solving problems. For example, she helps children as they concentrate and learn to join construction equipment, and to build their own models as they become more confident.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder maintains a calm and peaceful environment for children in which they listen and concentrate well in their play. She provides lots of activities to support children's interest in physical play. For example, children choose when they play outside where they climb, slide, ride wheeled toys and play ball games. The childminder encourages children's interest in the natural environment, such as when they talk about the ants they find. She helps children to develop positive attitudes and behaviour, such as learning to share and respect others, through her consistent messages and the good example she sets.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the skills they need for their future learning and are well prepared to move on to school. They explore freely and make their own choices, such as choosing toys which they move between the garden and indoor play areas. Children persevere to overcome challenges and take a pride in their achievements. They develop good independence and manage tasks efficiently for themselves. Children communicate their needs effectively and engage well in their play.
