This provision is good

 The childminder has a thorough understanding of how to keep children safe from harm. For example, she completes regular fire drills with children to help them feel safe and secure.  The childminder completes regular assessments of the children's skills and uses these well to plan activities to meet the next stages of their learning and development.  Children benefit from participating in a stimulating range of activities and outings. For example, they enjoyed recognising their reflection while exploring the local mirror sculptures outdoors.  The childminder provides a warm, caring environment that supports children's emotional well-being. Children are happy and behave well.  Children make good progress from their starting points and learn skills to prepare them well for a move to nursery or school. For example, younger babies learn to say new words and older children learn to use a toilet independently.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not provide further opportunities to help older children to strengthen their ability to recognise written words and symbols.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 review opportunities for children to improve their understanding of written words and symbols to enhance their early literacy development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the childminder's home and communal garden area.  The inspector discussed how the childminder delivers the educational programme, and how she observes and tracks children's progress.  The inspector looked at a sample of the childminder's records, including the procedures for keeping children safe, and the childminder's qualifications.  The inspector looked at the toys, other resources and equipment used to create a stimulating environment for children.  The inspector discussed how the childminder evaluates her practice and works in partnership with parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a thorough knowledge of what procedures to follow should she have a concern about a child in her care, including the services available to families who may need extra support. The childminder keeps parents informed about their child's progress on a regular basis, and she works closely with parents to help their children progress. For example, she gathers information before children start, which she uses effectively to help them settle. The childminder collects parents' opinions to identify areas of her practice that may need improving. For example, she has recently increased the range of places she visits with the children in response to parents' feedback.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is good and at times strong. The childminder provides children with opportunities to follow their interests and learn new vocabulary. For example, children enjoyed choosing to build towers with construction blocks and practising their new words, such as 'push' and 'fall'. Since the last inspection, the childminder has improved the resources and activities that she provides to help young children understand technology. For example, children print out digital photographs of their excursions, and use the internet safely to play age-relevant educational games.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are eager to learn and are well behaved. They show they feel safe with the childminder, for example, going to her for reassurance and warmth if they are upset. The childminder provides children with freshly cooked nutritious food, and all children can successfully feed themselves. The childminder takes children on outings. For example, they attend numerous local community groups and special celebrations. She involves the older children in decision making, such as helping to choose the destinations, and extends their knowledge of the local communities and people around them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children confidently explore the toys and activities and are motivated to learn. Children make steady progress from their starting points. For example, older children talk about activities they would like to do next and use their imagination to discuss where they will take their toy train on the journey. Younger babies are learning to improve their balance as they practise early walking.
