This provision is good

 Children are happy, settled and build close bonds with the childminder and her assistant. They help children to become emotionally secure and develop the confidence to try new things.  The childminder takes positive steps to evaluate the effectiveness of her service and has made many improvements since registration. She knows what is working well and what she can improve on to enhance her practice even further.  The childminder and her assistant make regular use of training and update their knowledge and understanding of good practice and any changes to regulations.  Children make good progress and become independent learners. They benefit from a broad range of activities and resources, both indoors and outside.  The childminder provides parents with regular information about their children's progress. She receives very complimentary feedback from parents about the care she provides.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder has not yet established highly successful partnerships with all other early years settings that children attend.  On occasions, the childminder and assistant do not give children enough time to think and respond to their questions before they answer them themselves.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 strengthen the partnerships with the other early years settings that children also attend to promote greater continuity in children's learning and development  enhance opportunities for children to think deeply and express their own ideas.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outside, and assess the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector viewed focused activities with the childminder and her assistant and discussed the children's progress and achievements.  The inspector viewed the children's development records.  The inspector reviewed evidence of the suitability and qualifications of the childminder and her assistant, self-evaluation, risk assessment and policies and procedures.  The inspector took account of the views of parents from the written testimonials obtained by the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has detailed policies and procedures to help keep children safe from harm. These are shared with her assistant and parents to ensure that everyone is aware of the action to take if there are child protection concerns. The childminder and her assistant have also completed first-aid and safeguarding training so they can both deal with emergency situations. Thorough risk assessments of the premises are carried out to ensure that possible hazards to children are removed or minimised. The childminder has made areas of her garden out of bounds to children while renovations are underway.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder and her assistant know the children well. They plan interesting activities based on children's interests and capabilities. They are enthusiastic practitioners who effectively motivate children to learn new things. Children are creative and play imaginatively with a variety of cars, small figures and role play materials. The childminder effectively observes and assesses children's progress and achievements. She tracks children's development to ensure there are no gaps in learning. Reports are regularly shared with parents so they are kept updated on their children's progress. Parents also share information about activities their children enjoy at home. Children go on regular outings and visit local community groups and soft-play centres. They socialise with other children and develop their understanding of their immediate community.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are polite and behave well. They make a good contribution to tidying up and willingly help to put toys away as they learn to take care of their environment. The childminder effectively supports children's growing understanding of how to keep themselves safe and healthy. A high standard of cleanliness is maintained in the premises. Children become very independent in their self-care and learn to fasten zips and buttons on their clothes. They have plenty of opportunities to play outdoors. Children are very active and enjoy investigating and developing physical skills in the fresh air.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their different starting points. They are observant, curious and become keen to join in. Children gain many important skills to help prepare them well for their future learning and their eventual move on to school. They develop counting and calculation skills and sort items by colour, size and shape. Children appreciate books and listen attentively to stories.
