p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder evaluates her practice well to identify relevant areas to improve children's experiences and her practice.  The childminder provides a good variety of resources and activities that link to individual children's interests. Children are motivated to learn and concentrate well.  The childminder has supportive partnerships with parents. For example, they work well together to help children engage in more physical exercise and to eat healthier foods.  Older children gain important skills to prepare them well for school. For example, the childminder provides opportunities for children to solve problems, experimenting with water and discussing what items float or sink.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder misses some opportunities to offer children who learn English as an additional language the chance to further practise speaking English.  The childminder does not effectively gather the opinions of the children and parents in her self-evaluation, to help her identify further areas to improve.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase the opportunities for children learning English as an additional language to communicate and speak more confidently in English  gather the views of parents and children more effectively to help identify any areas for further improvement.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the childminder's house and garden.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and the children at suitable times.  The inspector observed the childminder playing and communicating with the children inside and in the garden.  The inspector looked at a sample of the childminder's records, including how she tracks children's progress and the procedures for keeping children safe.  The inspector spoke to the childminder about how she plans to improve and develop the service that she provides.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands how to keep children safe from harm. She is clear about what procedures to follow if she has a concern about the welfare of a child. The childminder demonstrates a keen awareness of keeping her knowledge and skills updated. She works in partnership with other childminders to access training materials and new publications that help her to update her knowledge and skills successfully. Since the last inspection, the childminder has improved the safety checks that she completes before visits to local parks and community groups, to help her keep children safe from harm. The childminder keeps parents well informed about their child's progress. For example, she writes information in a diary for each child every day.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The quality of teaching is strong. The childminder tracks children's progress thoroughly and uses the comprehensive information well to plan activities that help children progress to the next stage of their learning and development. The childminder works closely with other providers to inform her planning. She offers a good balance between activities that she has planned and time where the children lead their own play. The childminder consistently develops the language skills of the older children. For example, they enjoyed making their own bread and learnt about and used the words 'dough', 'knead', and 'seeds'. The childminder keeps parents well informed of their child's progress.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a welcoming and caring environment that promotes children's emotional well-being. The childminder consistently fosters cooperation and good manners. Children are happy and behave well. She has high expectations for the children, who willingly help each other and share resources. The childminder encourages children to be independent in their daily routines. For example, older children learn to dress themselves, and younger children are willing to try to put on their own aprons. The childminder offers children ample opportunities to get fresh air and physical exercise in the garden and through visits to local parks.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress and are meeting expected levels for their age. Children are keen to explore and try new things. Young children enjoyed pretending to cook with pots and pans, choosing to add their own water to 'cook' the pasta. Older children are ready for school. For example, they count with confidence and use the toilet independently. They are confident speakers and learn to manage their own emotions.
