This provision is good

 The childminder provides a calm and welcoming home environment where children feel safe and valued. Children settle well and play happily. Their behaviour is good.  The childminder knows how children learn through play. Children make good progress in their learning in relation to their different starting points. They are ready for the next stage in their learning and development, including the move to school.  Children enjoy the outdoor activities and fresh air. For example, they manoeuvre bikes safely and develop a good awareness of space and others around them.  Children learn to cross roads safely, for example, through outings. The childminder helps children to practise fire evacuations to leave her home calmly and safely in an emergency.  The childminder establishes strong links with parents and other early years providers. This helps to ensure continuity and progression in children's care and learning.

p.1

This provision is good

 Parents fully contribute to the next steps of their children's learning and development. They are satisfied with the good quality of learning and support their children receive.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not use all opportunities to broaden children's understanding of the world, such as their awareness of different people, communities and their cultures.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 broaden the range of opportunities for children to learn about other people, their communities and cultures.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children playing indoors and outdoors.  The inspector sampled the policies, procedures, risk assessments and children's development records.  The inspector discussed the childminder's procedures to safeguard children, and her process for reflecting on her practice.  The inspector took into account the views and comments of parents and children.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of safeguarding practices and reporting procedures to keep children safe. For example, she undertakes regular and thorough checks on her home environment and ensures that toys are fully operational to support children's learning and development. The childminder attends regular training courses to improve the quality of her practice, and meets other childminders and professionals to share good practice. This is evident in the way she seeks the views of parents, children and others to improve her service. The childminder successfully continues to secure good outcomes for all children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder encourages parents to share what they know about their children. She talks to the parents on a daily basis and shares her observations and planning with them. When identifying any gaps in children's learning, she provides extra support to help them catch up swiftly. The childminder generally provides a wide range of experiences that follow children's interests and support their learning and development. She motivates children to learn. For example, children choose their activities independently and they use their imagination well as they draw colourful pictures and explain their ideas. The childminder interacts well with children and acts on their suggestions to support their communication and language skills further. For example, children purposely build construction models and they talk about how they can improve their work.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder builds good relationships with parents and children. She supports children's social and emotional skills well. For example, she shares her behaviour policies and procedures with parents and children so that they are clear about the expectations. Children are confident to ask for help when needed. They share toys fairly and take turns. They help to tidy resources and consider the views of others. The childminder helps children adopt healthy lifestyles. For instance, she talks to children about the importance of personal hygiene and healthy eating. Children enjoy healthy snacks and know that fruits and water are good for them.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children learn to listen attentively and respond well to instructions. They enjoy books and talk about their favourite pictures and characters. Children roll play dough, pat and cut their favourite shapes safely. They practise their mathematical skills, for example, as they count, sort, match objects and confidently learn to solve problems. Older children know letters and sounds in their names and those of others around them. They write their names correctly and unaided.
