This provision is good

 The childminder is well qualified and experienced. She provides children with a good range of learning opportunities and experiences across all areas of learning. The childminder has a thorough understanding of how young children learn through play.  Children are happy, confident and settled in the childminder's care. This is because the childminder provides a homely environment where children develop a good sense of belonging. Children show they have secure and warm relationships with the childminder and her assistant, supporting their emotional well-being effectively.  The childminder works well in partnerships with parents, other early years providers and local schools. This ensures that children's individual needs are closely monitored and there is continuity in their care and learning. Parents are complimentary about the provision and are happy with the care provided and the progress their children make.

p.1

This provision is good

 Children are kept safe and secure because the childminder is clear about potential risks to children in the home, garden and on outings. The childminder helps children to learn how to keep themselves safe on outings and through their play and use of equipment.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although children have some opportunities to make choices about what they do, they are not consistently able to access a broad range of resources independently to initiate their own play and learning.  Self-evaluation systems are in place, however, the childminder is not making the most effective use of these to help her to improve outcomes for children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further the opportunities for children to independently make choices about activities and resources and to lead their own learning through play  strengthen self-evaluation systems and use the information gathered to improve outcomes for children.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at the areas of the premises that are used for childminding.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and her assistant. She sampled a range of documentation, including evidence of the suitability of persons living and working on the premises and the childminder's qualifications.  The inspector talked to the childminder about her self-evaluation and plans for improvement.  The inspector took account of the views of parents recorded in references.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder is secure in her knowledge of the possible signs of abuse and neglect. She keeps up to date with the local safeguarding procedures and knows how to respond in the event of a concern. The childminder ensures that her assistant fully understands their role in protecting children and keeping them safe. They also have a good awareness of the wider issues in the care and protection of children. The childminder recognises the benefits of keeping her knowledge and skills up to date by attending local forum meetings. She monitors the quality of teaching and learning. She regularly checks for any gaps in children's learning and is clear about where children may need more support. Parents are kept fully informed about their children's achievements and are encouraged to be involved in their child's learning at home.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children are confident learners and benefit from the childminder's enthusiasm and good teaching strategies. The childminder and her assistant know the children well. They place a good focus on promoting children's communication and language skills through their good interactions. They model language well and encourage older children to explore ideas by asking them questions. All children develop a love of books and singing. They like to explore the den area where they can look at books independently. Children have good opportunities to practise their mark-making skills and they love to draw pictures. Older children show their confidence in number recognition and counting while looking at books. Young children are very inquisitive and like playing with bricks where they enjoy banging them together. Older children concentrate on building a big tower. The childminder encourages children to develop their innate curiosity and have fun as they use their senses

to see how many dinosaurs they can find hidden in cream. They talk about what the cream feels like and that their hands are getting messy.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children's health, well-being and physical development are effectively promoted. They enjoy walks in the local area and trips to the library. Children develop good social skills when they visit local toddler groups where they can play and make friends with their peers. Older children talk about the local area and the village. They learn about the needs of others and take part in a variety of celebrations. Children enjoy healthy snacks and well-balanced meals that are planned in consultation with parents. The childminder and her assistant are good role models. They encourage children to learn about good behaviours, such as being kind and sharing.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children's all-round development is fostered successfully to help them embrace their move to school. Babies and younger children develop confidence and physical skills as they explore their surroundings. Older children's imagination and language skills are very good. They are confident, ask questions, have their own ideas and behave well. They are supported to develop their independence skills and manage their personal care.
