This provision is good

 The quality of teaching is good. The childminder provides a range of activities and experiences that is appealing to children. She follows children's lead as they play and learn, adapting and extending activities to challenge them appropriately, overall.  The childminder observes children at play, helping her to assess their development and identify their strengths and interests. She plans activities that encourage children to develop new skills and build on what they already know and can do. This contributes to the good progress they make in all areas of learning.  Parents are very happy with the services that the childminder and her colleagues provide. They commend their welcoming and flexible approach, commenting that they cannot fault the level of care.  Effective arrangements are in place to share information with other professionals and settings. This helps to provide a consistent approach to supporting children's continued

learning and development.  The childminder offers children plenty of praise and encouragement. This helps to promote their emotional well-being and contributes to the confidence and self-esteem they demonstrate.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does not give children enough time to think and respond to her questions and prompts as she supports their learning during play.  Sometimes, the creative activities the childminder provides are overdirected or restrictive.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance teaching skills and give children plenty of time to respond to questions and prompts that support their developing thinking skills even more effectively  provide children with more opportunities to freely explore and investigate a range of materials and promote their creativity to even higher levels.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector had a tour of the premises.  The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability checks carried out on persons living and working on the premises.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector spoke to one parent during the inspection and took account of the views of others through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is qualified and identifies further training she would like to attend. This contributes to her ability to plan effective educational programmes and her capacity to strengthen these as she extends her knowledge and skills. She works closely with her co- childminders and they support their assistant well. Together, they seek the views of parents and children to help them review all areas of practice and make plans for future developments of their service. They share knowledge and support each other to look at ways to build on the quality of their teaching and learning. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder knows what to do if she has a concern about a child's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder understands the different ways young children learn. She tailors her teaching to, generally, meet the individual needs of the range of children who attend. Good arrangements for sharing information with parents help to support children's ongoing learning and development. Children have plenty of opportunities to select their own activities and the childminder supports them well to extend their learning as they play. For example, as children play in the water tray, she introduces a game of 'hide the duck' and incorporates numbers and positional language into the game. This helps to promote children's mathematical development. Children develop confidence in their abilities and are keen to challenge themselves. For example, they make very good attempts at climbing and balancing on outdoor equipment.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has good procedures in place to support new children. She gets to know their needs quickly and children settle quickly and confidently into her care. The childminder works alongside her colleagues and parents to provide a consistent approach to managing children's behaviour. Children know what is expected of them and they behave well. The childminder encourages children to develop their independence which helps to prepare them for school. For example, they carry their tray at lunchtime and manage their own clothing. The childminder promotes children's physical health and well- being effectively. They benefit from nutritious meals and plenty of fresh air and exercise. The childminder has good hygiene procedures in place and teaches children how to keep themselves safe and healthy.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are motivated and confident learners who become engaged in activities. They follow simple instructions and cooperate with other children and adults, demonstrating a positive attitude to learning that helps to prepare them for school. All children make good progress and are working within the range of development expected for their age. Those children who are slower to develop key skills are supported well and catch up in their learning. Children develop early writing skills, helping to promote their progress in literacy and prepare them for later, more formal learning. For example, they trace their fingers through sand to form shapes and patterns, and make marks with chalk on the pavement.
