This provision is good
The childminder provides a well-balanced and exciting educational programme that captures children's interest well. This supports children's motivation and curiosity to learn. Children make good progress in their development. The childminder and her assistant regularly model language. For example, they provide a running commentary about the things that children do, to help them extend their vocabulary. Children develop good communication and language skills. The childminder provides a range of information about the setting so that parents know what to expect. Regular feedback about children's progress and consistent discussions contribute to a shared understanding of how to promote children's learning further. The childminder, together with her assistant, constantly evaluates the provision. For example, she actively seeks the views of parents and local authority advisors to identify priorities for improvement to enable her to improve outcomes. As a result, she has

revised her systems for observing and assessing children to make them more precise.

It is not yet outstanding because:
Children have limited opportunities to take part in activities and opportunities to support and encourage them to build on their existing literacy skills. For example, to promote their knowledge of linking letters to sounds. At times, the childminder does not consider opportunities that arise to encourage children to complete tasks independently.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

provide more challenging opportunities for pre-school children to develop their literacy skills further and to hear and say the initial sounds in words further encourage opportunities for children to attempt manageable tasks to extend their independence even further.

Inspection activities
The inspector had discussions with the childminder and her assistant relating to their practice and talked to children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector looked at areas of the premises used for childminding and sampled relevant documentation, including children's records. The inspector observed the childminder's practice and the learning opportunities provided. The inspector and childminder jointly observed children at play.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a thorough understanding of how to deal with child protection concerns. She confidently knows how to identify and minimise risks to children effectively. This contributes to maintaining children's safety and welfare well. The childminder works with an assistant. She monitors his practice through daily discussions to highlight and encourage best practice. The childminder makes good use of regular training courses to extend her and her assistant's skills and to continually improve their teaching and practice. For example, they have completed courses, such as about children's patterns of learning, children as natural thinkers and first aid. This has had a positive impact on children's care and learning. The childminder makes effective use of assessments of children's progress to monitor their achievements and plan activities that promote their development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder provides rich and imaginative experiences to help stimulate children's knowledge of the natural world. For example, they plant and water strawberries and potatoes, which helps them learn about growth and to care for living things. The childminder and her assistant continuously interact with the children to extend their learning and enjoyment. They effectively promote children's mathematical skills. For example, they learn to count and use mathematical language during every day play. The childminder provides children with real-life experiences. For instance, they use and handle real potatoes and onions in the well-resourced role-play kitchen to create soups.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder supports children to consider the needs of others. They learn to show respect for others and play well together. Children's behaviour is good. The childminder provides children with regular opportunities to go on trips. For example, they walk on the school run and visit local parks, which helps to support their physical skills and understanding of a healthy lifestyle. The childminder also encourages healthy eating with nutritious snacks and meals. She introduces children to a number of cultural and religious celebrations and displays print in different languages. Children learn to value similarities and differences between themselves and others.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in relation to their starting points. They acquire good knowledge and positive attitudes to prepare them for their future learning and move to school. For example, they are able to identify the letters in their names and are beginning to write them. Children choose from a wide variety of resources and opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor learners thrive in the environment.
