Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not fully understand her responsibility in relation to administering medication to children. As a result, she has administered medication without the appropriate written consent from parents.  The childminder has not established a regular way of accurately assessing children's progress and identifying what they need to learn next. This means that children are not always sufficiently challenged during activities to help them make good progress in all areas of their learning.  The childminder's self-evaluation and programme of professional development is not sufficiently focused on improving the quality of her teaching.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder is very caring. She meets children's individual needs and supports their emotional well-being effectively. Children are happy and feel secure and confident in her care.  The childminder keeps parents informed about how they can support their child's play and learning at home.  The childminder ensures a safe and secure home and garden area for children to play in.  Children learn how good hygiene supports their good health. For example, they understand they must wash their hands before they have their snack.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 ensure written permission from parents is obtained prior to the administration of each and every medicine 30/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

 ensure that knowledge of the observation and assessment process is developed and use this information to challenge children and accurately plan for their next steps in learning and development. 14/04/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 strengthen procedures for self-evaluation to ensure ongoing targets for improvement are based on rigorous monitoring of practice and use this to develop a programme of professional development to improve teaching.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day and through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder does not have a good enough understanding of the requirements in relation to the administration of medicine. The childminder has administered medication without obtaining appropriate written consent for that particular medicine. However, she has verbal consent from parents. This minimises the impact on children. The childminder has ensured that her assistant has attended all statutory training. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the procedures she should follow if she has a concern about the welfare of a child in her care. Her premises are safe and detailed risk assessments help her to identify potential hazards. The childminder evaluates her provision and takes the views of parents into account. However, the childminder has not focused on developing her practice to help improve the quality of her teaching. Therefore, the quality of teaching is inconsistent and is not good enough to

ensure that children make the best progress they can.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder observes children's learning. However, information gained from observing children is not used consistently to assess their individual level of achievement and plan accurately for their next steps in learning. Consequently, planned activities do not always offer an appropriate level of challenge or extend children's learning. Children enjoy lots of independent choice and opportunities to initiate their own play. The childminder encourages children in their play and plays alongside them to keep them interested. For example, she builds towers alongside children, commenting that hers has fallen over. She promotes their communication and language skills adequately. For example, she asks questions and introduces new words to extend children's vocabulary. Children are proud of their achievement as they learn how to crawl through a tunnel to retrieve a ball.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The childminder's practice with regard to the administration of medication is not robust enough to assure children's welfare. However, children have a good relationship with the childminder. They love the regular praise that they receive as they build with blocks or roll the ball. Parents feel that they are well supported by the childminder. They welcome her flexible approach. The childminder has clear behavioural expectations which she calmly reinforces. Daily opportunities are provided for children to take part in physical activities. They enjoy spending time outdoors in the childminder's garden. This supports their physical development.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses in assessment do not help to support children to make good progress. However, children are confident and capable learners, who are developing the basic skills needed for their eventual move on to school. Older children begin to recognise numbers and talk confidently about illustrations in books. Babies develop their physical skills as they move through a tunnel.
