This home was judged good at the full inspection. At this interim inspection, Ofsted judges that it has improved effectiveness .

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The home continues to be led by an experienced registered manager who is in the process of completing her level 5 diploma in leadership and management. She regularly monitors staff practice and young people’s progress to ensure that she has a good understanding of the home’s strengths and weaknesses. A consistent core staff team means that young people are able to build and maintain strong relationships with staff.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people continue to make good and at times excellent progress in aspects of their development. They are healthy and are encouraged by staff to attend routine and specialist health appointments. Young people all have 100% attendance in school and continue to progress well academically. One young person is currently on target to take nine GCSEs and is achieving higher than the expected grades in some of her subjects. Another young person has recently won a business enterprise award, competing against pupils from other schools in the area. The manager has high expectations for the young people in her care. She is proactive and works in partnership with local authorities and education departments. This ensures that young people are able to access good schools and receive the specialist help that they require.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The manager and staff work in partnership with social workers to ensure that young people enjoy positive contact with their families and friends. The manager challenges other professionals when required and advocates well for young people. One independent reviewing officer commented, ‘Thank you for your proactive advocating for [a young person]. She is very lucky to have you in her corner and I remain really impressed with your commitment and care of her.’

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

Young people are safe in the home. They do not go missing. The manager swiftly follows up any concerns or allegations raised by young people to ensure that these are investigated appropriately. Staff promote positive behaviour well. They use incentives and rewards to manage young people’s challenging behaviour. As a result, instances of physical intervention and negative consequences are low.

p.2

children and young people since the most recent full inspection

The requirement and recommendation made at the last inspection have both been met. The locality risk assessment has been updated to reflect the risks in the local area, and the children’s guide has been reviewed in partnership with young people.

What the inspection judgements mean

At the interim inspection, we make a judgement on whether the home has improved in effectiveness, sustained effectiveness or declined in effectiveness since the previous full inspection. This is in line with the ‘Inspection of children’s homes: framework for inspection’.

Information about this inspection

Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children’s home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference that adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children’s home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people who it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
