This provision is good
The childminder uses a wide range of effective teaching strategies to help develop children's speaking, listening and vocabulary skills. This helps children to develop a secure foundation for their future learning, including starting school. The childminder places a strong emphasis on children's safety. She identifies and addresses potential hazards and uses safety devices to help children play in safety. Children are motivated and eager to play and learn. They develop good levels of independence and confidence. Children engage in purposeful play and make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points. The childminder regularly shares information about children's progress with parents and provides ideas to support home learning. This helps to build on continuity in learning. Children have good manners and behave well. The childminder gives clear rules and expectations for behaviour. She is a good role model for children. She teaches children

to share and instils positive values in them.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not consistently provide children with a wide range of resources and activities to challenge them further and build on their curiosity, particularly for those who enjoy playing and learning outdoors. The childminder does not make the most of opportunities for children to explore, investigate and build further on their awareness of the natural world.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector viewed all play areas in the property used for childminding. The inspector observed activities and interactions between the childminder and children throughout the inspection. The inspector spoke with the childminder at appropriate times throughout the inspection. The inspector looked at parents' written references and took their views into account. The inspector viewed documentation, including children's learning records, policies and procedures.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of child protection procedures and knows how to report any concerns regarding children's welfare. She regularly researches online and liaises with other professionals to discuss changes in legislation. This helps her to be aware of wider safeguarding issues, such as being able to identify any children who may be at risk of extreme views or behaviours. The childminder reflects on her practice well and involves others when making changes to help improve outcomes for children. For example, she recognised the need to cut down sugar levels in food to help children have more healthy meals. She made changes to her menu after consulting parents and other professionals on how to prevent obesity in children. The childminder tracks and monitors children's progress effectively and works closely with the local nursery school to support children's move on to school.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder gathers information about children's interests and assesses their skills and abilities when they start. She completes ongoing assessments to plan what children need to learn next. She organises her indoor play area very well and provides a good range of resources for children to choose from. For example, children have numerous opportunities to understand that print carries meaning to support their early literacy skills. The childminder interacts well with children and asks relevant questions to encourage their vocabulary. For example, during a reading activity, she sat with children and asked them to identify pictures and explained what was being read. This helped the children to remain focused and engaged for an extended period of time.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder forms secure emotional attachments with children, and she adapts the routines well to suit their individual needs. This helps children to feel happy and confident to initiate their own play. Diversity is celebrated well in the setting. For example, the childminder effectively reflects children's individual backgrounds and experiences to build on their awareness of similarities and differences. Children take part in varied activities to support their physical well-being, such as walks to nursery and the local children's centre.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Older children talk confidently, and younger ones begin to join words to form sentences. Children are very imaginative and active learners. For example, they look at pictures in books to guide them to make different models of vehicles, such as a transporter and a truck. Children acquire good mathematical skills. For instance, they can count, identify shapes and match colours. Children gain useful skills needed for their next stage of learning, including starting school.
