This provision is good
The childminder and her assistant provide a welcoming and stimulating learning environment for children. Children make their own decisions about what they would like to play with from a wide range of toys and resources. The childminder reflects on her practice well. She includes the views of parents and makes improvements to her practice. For example, she identified the need to improve sensory play experiences for children and attended training to enhance this area of her practice. Children gain good language and communication skills. Older children enjoy having conversations during mealtimes, and younger children excitedly respond to the childminder's voice. All children make good progress from their starting points. Children enjoy a wide range of experiences and social situations. For example, they go on regular outings to the farm and parks to explore their surroundings, and they attend groups to mix with other children and adults.
p.1
This provision is good
Children learn about people who are from backgrounds that are different to their own. For example, they explore books and resources that reflect diversity in a positive way.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
The childminder does not regularly encourage children to count and use numbers in everyday routines and during their play, as part of their mathematical development. Although the childminder provides healthy food and regular outdoor play, she misses opportunities to teach children the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of the childminder's teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including recruitment documents, suitability checks and children's records. The inspector took into account the views of parents and carers through sampling feedback forms. The inspector had a discussion with the childminder, and evaluated the children's learning and development with the childminder after an activity. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good understanding of child protection issues, including up-to-date guidance and the local procedures to follow if she has concerns about a child's welfare. She works well with other professionals and shares information with staff at other settings the children attend. This promotes continuity in supporting children's development. The childminder regularly assesses and monitors the progress that children make. She shares children's achievements with parents and successfully involves them in their children's learning. The childminder continues to monitor and update her knowledge and skills and those of her assistant, to support their professional development. For example, following training they have increased their understanding of how to develop children's language through interaction and play.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder skilfully uses children's interests to support their learning. For example, she introduces new descriptive language to their vocabulary, such as 'squelchy mud'. Children enjoy 'popping' bubbles in the garden and move confidently to try to catch them. The childminder plans exciting and interesting activities for the children to take part in, based on their interests. For example, she created a farm with 'mud' for the children to explore following a visit to the farm. She recognises children's capabilities and plans to meet their needs well. For example, she plans messy play well so all ages of children can join in. The childminder helps children with their early literacy skills. For example, she sounds out the letters in their names as she writes on their pictures.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are happy and well settled. They develop good relationships with the childminder and their friends. Children learn to identify and manage risks independently. For example, they recognise the need to be 'careful' when they play near the younger children, and they ask the childminder for help when taking on challenging tasks, such as climbing the rope ladder. Children behave well and are helpful. For example, they clean the table after messy play and tidy up the toys before snack time. The childminder constantly praises children and this raises their self-esteem.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are well prepared for the next stage of their learning and the eventual move to school. They are confident and motivated to learn. For example, children rush to play with a toy farm that is set up for them. Children are imaginative and use their good communication skills to involve others in their play. For example, they talk about the animals on the farm and recall their experiences of a recent trip. Young children develop good physical skills and enjoy exploring how their bodies move, indoors and outdoors.
