This provision is good

 The management team has worked hard to bring about a marked improvement in the overall quality of the nursery. They have implemented a new planning system that focuses on children's ever changing interests and covers all aspects of their learning. Staff's practice is monitored and any training needs are identified and addressed. Teaching is of high quality and children make good progress.  Parents have attended workshops in the nursery about how to encourage children's mathematical and literacy development. This, along with sharing information about their child's progress, encourages parents to support their child's learning at home.  Staff provide good opportunities for children to observe and investigate the natural world. Children learn about animals from first-hand experiences as they regularly feed the nursery's chickens and collect their eggs.  Staff build positive relationships with children by giving them their full attention and

providing warm and consistent care. This helps children to feel relaxed and safe and to engage in new experiences.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Staff do not consistently offer children enough challenge so that they move towards the next steps in their learning as quickly as possible.  There are not enough opportunities for children to gain an awareness of how they differ from, or are similar to, other people.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

 give children the challenge they need to consistently reach the next steps in their learning as rapidly as possible  provide children with more opportunities to build on their respect for, and understanding of, the similarities and differences between themselves and others in the wider community.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector discussed with staff how they assess children's learning and plan for children's progress.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the nursery's manager.  The inspector held a meeting with the nursery's management team. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of staff working at the nursery.  The inspector spoke with staff and children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day and from information included in the nursery's own parent survey.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. There is a comprehensive, up-to-date safeguarding policy in place. Staff are aware of the procedure they must follow if they have any concerns that a child is suffering from abuse. The management team skilfully analyses and reflects on the progress of individual and specific groups of children and makes comparisons across the nursery. This helps to make sure that children who need support to catch up with their peers are quickly identified and planned for. Staff develop positive relationships with the local authority advisers, schools and children's centres. These effective partnerships help staff to evaluate and build upon their practice to ensure children continue to make good progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Staff provide a wide range of activities that captures children's interests and inspires creativity. They hide pre-frozen egg shapes with toy dinosaurs inside around the outdoor play area. Staff encourage children to make a simple map of the outdoor learning environment. This promotes children's writing skills, helping them to give meaning to the marks they make. Children are enthusiastic and excited as they try to find the dinosaur eggs. During such activities, staff talk about the strategies they can use to find the dinosaur eggs by using the map, thereby, encouraging children to think critically. Once they find the eggs, children are encouraged to make comparisons about their size and colour and explore what happens to them as they start to melt. Staff talk to children and ask them questions to extend their thinking and vocabulary. Staff support children well so that they develop the skills they need in readiness for school.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Staff provide children with nutritious and balanced meals and snacks. Children have the opportunity to try healthy foods linked to their current interest in a story about a boy who grows beanstalks. They are encouraged to closely observe a range of beans and discuss what they taste like and make comparisons about their colour and appearance. This, in addition to daily outdoor play times, helps children to develop their awareness of the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. The outdoor environment offers children good opportunities to take manageable risks in their play. The extensive wooden climbing apparatus helps children to develop their agility, balance and coordination.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

All children make good progress. Babies sit on the floor and investigate flour with their hands and feet. Staff follow their interest and provide water for them to mix with the flour and make marks on the child-height mirror on the wall. Toddlers are engrossed as they roll, poke and shape their cinnamon scented dough creations. Pre-school children concentrate as they design and build houses for the little pigs in their story. Children are confident, happy and talk freely and enthusiastically to staff and visitors about what they are doing.
