Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 One-to-one meetings between staff and their manager do not give them the opportunity to discuss any concerns they have about children, receive feedback and support to improve their work or raise any issues they have.  The Disclosure and Barring Service check for an apprentice has not been obtained either from the college or by the nursery. The apprentice does not work in an unsupervised capacity with children.  Teaching is inconsistent across the nursery and at times tasks such as staff answering the telephone are allowed to disrupt activities.  Documents, such as accident and existing injuries records, the progress check at two years old and attendance registers are not routinely completed in full or in a timely manner. The owner did not notify Ofsted that a new manager had been employed.  Overall, children make progress from their starting points and learn useful skills for their future education. However, younger children are not challenged sufficiently well.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 Children spend time concentrating on activities. They take pride in their achievements and enjoy receiving praise.  Staff are well qualified and experienced. They use their knowledge and skills to plan a range of interesting activities that cover the areas of learning required by the early years foundation stage.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

Due Date

 ensure that staff supervisions meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage 27/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

 obtain Disclosure and Barring Service checks for all adults who work with children, including apprentices 27/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

 make sure that required records, such as accident and existing injury records, the progress check at two years old and attendance registers are promptly and fully completed. 27/03/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 improve consistency in teaching so that all children, and particularly those who are youngest, have uninterrupted, good quality learning experiences.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspectors observed activities in both rooms of the nursery and in the outdoor area.  The inspectors spoke to members of staff and children at appropriate times during the inspection and held meetings with the owner and manager of the nursery.  One inspector carried out a joint observation with the manager.  The inspectors took account of the views of parents spoken to on the day of the inspection.  The inspectors looked at children's records, planning documentation, evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery and a range of other documentation, including policies and procedures.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The owner and the manager review the nursery provision and set appropriate targets for improvement and development. Parents are given appropriate information about their child's development. They are asked about what their children know, understand and can do at home before they start to attend the nursery. Use of additional government funding, such as the early years pupil premium, is used carefully to target the specific needs of the individual disadvantaged children in receipt of the funding. Gaps in their attainment and others nationally are beginning to close. Safeguarding is effective. Staff have an adequate understanding of the signs that a child might be at risk and what they would do. They know where to find contact details for other agencies should they need them.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Staff skills in modelling play, using questions and extending children's learning vary across the nursery. There is a wide range of interesting activities provided for children. However, staff working with the younger children miss opportunities to introduce children to the activities, which in turn limits children's experiences. Older children, on the other hand, experience stronger teaching. Staff initiate play and introduce themes and ideas to children which they continue throughout the day. For example, staff used playdough to show children how to make a caterpillar. Once made, the children took their caterpillars with them while they looked at a book about the lifecycle of a caterpillar. Later they made more caterpillars which they measured and compared. Staff assessment of children's development is accurate. It is used appropriately to identify the next steps in children's learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are cared for in a welcoming and well-planned environment. They are settled, happy and confident, and have secure relationships with the adults who care for them. Staff are good role models to children and use gentle reminders when children forget the rules of the nursery. Children behave well. Older children are developing friendships and play well together, for example, two boys patiently built a model with each one taking on a role and negotiating when they wanted to change. Children's care needs are well attended to. They have healthy snacks of fruit during the day, nappies are changed regularly and older children use the toilets independently.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are at developmental levels that are typical for their age. All children have positive attitudes towards play and their overall literacy and numeracy skills are developing appropriately. However, younger children do not make good progress because staff do not extend and challenge them sufficiently well. Nevertheless, young children are encouraged and supported to dress themselves for outdoor play, putting on their shoes and coats with help from adults. Older children draw recognisable pictures with details, such as sharp teeth on monsters, and make good attempts to write their name.
