This provision is good

 The childminder is caring, kind and thoughtful. She knows the children well and provides them with good levels of emotional security. Children are self-assured, happy and confidently explore their surroundings.  The childminder teaches children about various cultures and religions to help them to learn about and respect others, for instance, by discussing and celebrating special events.  Children engage well in the wide range of activities and are keen to play and learn. They make good progress in their learning.  The childminder regularly assesses safety risks in all areas children use to identify and remove any hazards.  The childminder evaluates the quality of her setting well. She seeks the views of parents to help reflect on the service she provides, identifying her setting's strengths and areas to develop, to help maintain children's outcomes.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not make the most of opportunities to encourage children's curiosity about technology and how things work.  The childminder does not regularly extend children's knowledge of how to evacuate in the event of an emergency.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 improve opportunities to extend children's interest in technology  increase opportunities for children to learn how to keep themselves and others safe.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector spoke to the childminder and the children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with the children.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including policies and procedures, and children's records.  The inspector conducted a tour of the premises that the childminder uses for childminding purposes.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder understands her duties in ensuring children's welfare and knows how to report any concerns if she suspects a child is at risk of harm. The childminder recognises the importance of professional development. She is proactive in seeking opportunities to improve her knowledge and teaching practice. For example, she researches using childcare websites and by attending a play therapy course. This has led to a better understanding of how children learn and develop. The childminder monitors children's progress effectively. She regularly checks on what children are able to do, to support her to identify and address any gaps in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides a wide range of opportunities for children to develop their creativity. For instance, she provides role-play experiences to encourage them to engage in pretend play and develop their imagination. Children take great pride in creating tasty dishes from the well-resourced activity kitchen. The childminder has a good understanding of how to promote language development in young children, and she skilfully supports their interest in the language of stories. For example, the childminder brings stories to life using various tones to capture children's interest. As they move through the book, children repeat key phrases.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder has developed good relationships with the parents and the children. Parents are fully informed about their children's day, for example, through daily diaries and regular opportunities to look at children's folders. There is a regular two-way flow of information as parents inform the childminder about children's interests and how they are progressing at home. Children are happy and confident. The childminder supports children to follow good personal health and hygiene routines. For instance, children wash their hands before meals. Children practise their physical skills and enjoy outdoor play in the garden and at soft play areas. Children also benefit from outings away from the home, such as through visits to local toddler groups where they benefit from good opportunities to socialise with other children of the same age.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children enthusiastically join in all the learning experiences and make good progress in relation to their starting points. Through their play, children learn about colours, numbers and shapes. Children are motivated to learn and concentrate well. Children become independent learners and learn to manage their personal needs well. For example, they make independent healthy choices about their snacks, which they select from the snack drawer. Children develop the key skills they need to move on to pre-school and school.
