p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Young people continue to go from strength to strength in terms of their progress and development. All young people continue to achieve well at school and to conduct themselves with courtesy and maturity.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
A generally calm and happy atmosphere prevails at the home and young people respond well to this. The majority are fortunate in enjoying long-term placements here, and they respond well to the highly nurturing care provided by staff.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Young people are developing new insights into their behaviour, and are learning to manage their emotional responses, by taking themselves off for reflection, for example. The rare instances of challenging behaviour are managed well, and without the need for physical restraint.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Young people are enjoying life alongside their peers. One young person has really taken to college life, making good friends and developing a healthy social life. Others have seen huge improvement in the quality of the contact with their families, leading to young people being able to spend a greater amount of time with them.
p.2
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
Safeguarding practice continues to be highly effective. The modelling of behaviour by staff, and the messages they give to young people about keeping safe, have real impact. For example, one young person disclosed to a member of school staff that he had been offered drugs, but had declined them. There are no concerns about child exploitation at this home, and young people choose not to go missing because they feel safe and settled there.

Partnership working with the police, families and other professionals also continues to be a positive and productive feature of this home. For example, local police have been invited to the home to help develop relationships with young people, and to counter potential negative attitudes towards the police. Parents have also been assisted by the manager and staff in how to support their children. Parents have found this approach helpful in managing potentially difficult conversations with their children. The manager continues to be highly alert to any potential safeguarding matters, and shows leadership in challenging the practice and decision-making of others. For example, she raised safeguarding concerns in relation to the restraint practice of another team, and escalated to senior local authority management a decision to change contact arrangements for one young person. This ensured that the court

order was complied with, as well as safeguarding the welfare of the young person concerned. On another occasion, the manager requested, and was granted by the local authority, an urgent review of one young person’s placement.
p.3
children and young people since the most recent full inspection
One young person has been supported to make a very successful transition to independent living accommodation. The young person continues to enjoy excellent support and maintains strong links with staff and other young people at the home. For example, when he is invited to Sunday dinner, staff collect him from his flat and return him home again. This allows him to spend time with the young people with whom he lived for over four years.

New referrals to the home are carefully assessed for the impact these would have on the dynamics of the group as a whole, and in terms of being able to meet individual needs. When new admissions are agreed, the manager ensures that all information and consents are in place. This helps to prepare a firm foundation on which to build stability and success for young people who are new to the home.

Monitoring by the manager and the independent visitor continues to make a valuable contribution to improving the quality of care that young people enjoy and identifying areas for further improvement. Recommendations from the last inspection are met.

What the inspection judgements mean

Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children and young people living in the children's home. Inspectors considered the quality of work and the difference that adults make to the lives of children and young people. They read case files, watched how professional staff work with children, young people and each other and discussed the effectiveness of help and care given to children and young people. Wherever possible, they talked to children, young people and their families. In addition, the inspectors have tried to understand what the children's home knows about how well it is performing, how well it is doing and what difference it is making for the children and young people whom it is trying to help, protect and look after. This inspection focused on the effectiveness of the home and the progress and experiences of children and young people since the most recent full inspection.
