This provision is good

 The childminder's home is warm and welcoming. She provides a good range of resources for children to select independently. The childminder forms strong bonds with children and they are happy and settle well in her care.  The childminder evaluates her practice well. She uses the good relationships that she has built with the parents and other childminders to reflect on the service that she is providing.  The childminder successfully monitors children's progress. She uses her knowledge of the children to plan interesting activities. For example, children enjoy joining in preparing their snack during a cooking activity.  The childminder uses her skills to support children to develop their communication and language. Children are confident at holding conversations with the childminder and their friends. Children are well prepared for their move on to school.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder supervises children appropriately but misses some opportunities that arise to teach them about risk and how to keep themselves safe.  The childminder's assessments of children's progress are not consistently as precise as possible to help her to fully refine her teaching.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase the support for children to consider the consequences of their actions to enrich their understanding of personal safety  make the best use of observations to make precise assessments of children's progress, to plan even more effectively for their individual next steps in learning.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector sampled a range of documentation.  The inspector took into account the views of parents and carers through sampling feedback forms.  The inspector discussed and evaluated the children's learning and development with the childminder, having observed activities.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times throughout the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder is experienced and committed to developing her practice. She works well to keep up her professional development. For example, she attends courses and reads information to help her to support children with their development. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of the local procedures to follow if she has concerns about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder develops good relationships with the children's parents. Since her last inspection, she has improved the way she shares information about their children's progress and involves parents well in their children's learning. The childminder also works well with parents to support children's care needs, such as potty training.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder interacts with children well. She has a good understanding of their capabilities and plans activities and experiences to capture their interest. The childminder helps children to gain a good awareness of mathematics. For example, they learn to measure ingredients and recognise quantity during cooking activities. Children use their imaginations well and are creative in their play. For example, they make monsters with the play dough and tell stories about the monster to their friends. Children enjoy stories and are able to sit and listen before discussing the story and the characters with the childminder.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children behave well; they play cooperatively and support each other with everyday tasks. For example, children work together to tidy up the puzzles, making sure that they fit in the box. Children are polite and are confident at telling the childminder what they would like to do next. Children have opportunities to socialise with other children of similar ages. For example, the childminder takes them on outings and to groups with other childminders. Children learn about the differences and similarities in people who are from backgrounds different to their own. For example, they learn about cultural clothing and find out about different foods.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from their starting points. All children are confident and active learners. Children develop literacy skills well. For example, they learn to recognise letters that are familiar to them and sound out words to develop their early reading skills. Children are motivated and persist with their chosen activities for long periods of time. For example, young children concentrate well as they complete puzzles independently.
