Inspection activities

 The inspector looked at a range of documents, including policies and children's records.  The inspector observed the childminder interacting with children and discussed their progress, following a joint observation.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the childminder's self-evaluation and parents' views in written comments.  The inspector looked at all areas of the childminder's home used for childminding.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

The childminder has an exemplary knowledge of how to keep children safe and of the procedure to follow should she have any concerns about their welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder continually and very thoughtfully reflects on her excellent practice and keeps her knowledge and skills up to date. For example, she has carried out research to help her to make her observations even more focused to improve outcomes for children. Meticulous monitoring of children's progress helps the childminder provide very prompt and targeted support if there are any gaps in children's development.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

The childminder makes insightful and accurate assessments of children's development to successfully plan highly personalised learning for each child. She skilfully uses children's interests to extend their learning. For example, children enjoyed looking at dinosaurs in books, so the childminder encouraged them to make dinosaur eggs from dough. Young children become fully immersed and are highly motivated to learn. The childminder skilfully encourages children's natural curiosity, covering all areas of learning extremely well. For example, they develop excellent physical skills as they squeeze and mould the dough, learn to identify and mix different colours, while the childminder introduces new words and extends their language skills. Children have abundant opportunities to develop their early literacy, such as recognising letters and by sharing books. The childminder acknowledges the need to extend this learning for those who learn best outdoors.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder meets children's physical and emotional needs with great sensitivity. They are extremely secure in their routines, and simple signs displaying the daily activities, for example, support their understanding very successfully. Children soon become extremely independent. The childminder brings learning to life. For example, she reinforces children's excellent understanding of the importance of eating healthy food by involving them in regular cooking activities. The childminder expertly encourages children to be very physically active both indoors and outside. For example, children enjoy regular walks to local parks, and indoors they move to music with great enjoyment, developing an excellent sense of rhythm and creativity. Children thrive in this nurturing environment.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

Children are happy, relaxed and extremely confident and articulate communicators. Young children make excellent progress in their speech and language development, which prepares them exceptionally well for future learning. Older children gain the skills necessary for school. Children confidently count and recognise shapes and numbers, for example. They are very self-assured, independent and highly motivated learners.
