This provision is good

 Children make good progress and the childminder monitors their learning well. She makes detailed observations, which she uses effectively to identify children's current stages of development and their next steps in learning.  The childminder provides a stimulating environment with a good range of resources. She successfully supports children's learning and awareness of similarities and differences and the wider world.  Children behave well. For example, the childminder recognises their achievements. Children confidently join in the activities and are considerate of others.  The childminder develops very effective partnerships with parents and other early years settings that children attend. They work together to meet each child's care and learning needs through a consistent approach.  The childminder recognises the significance of reflecting on her practice. She attends regular training to keep her knowledge up to date. She has plans in place for the future

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Opportunities for children to explore tools and resources to help them develop their hand coordination are not developed quite as well as possible.  The childminder promotes mathematics well overall but does not consistently make the best of opportunities to offer even greater challenge for more able children.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make the most of opportunities for children to learn how to use different tools to develop their physical coordination in preparation for early writing  build on the success in supporting children to understand numbers and to count, to offer even greater challenge in their mathematical development.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed activities and the impact of teaching on children's learning.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and talked with children.  The inspector examined a selection of documentation.  The inspector discussed self-evaluation and observations of the children's play, learning and progress with the childminder.  The inspector took account of the written views of parents and carers.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has a good understanding of all the requirements. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good, up-to-date knowledge of child protection procedures and current safeguarding practice and a strong focus on children's safety and well-being. She has good organisation and planning, and her ongoing focus on training and monitoring has increased her understanding of how children learn. This has enabled her to provide quality play and sensory experiences indoors and outdoors and to provide good challenges overall for children's learning. This has improved the quality of teaching and outcomes for children.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder skilfully interacts with the children. For example, she supports their language well by asking questions and repeats words and sentences to help them hear these sounds said clearly. Children are interested in patterns and enthusiastically explore. For instance, the childminder encourages them to experiment with a wet sponge and to make marks that represent the beginning letter of their name. The childminder encourages the children's interest in letters, for instance, they refer to their place mat name and draw letters with their finger in the air. Children use language well to describe their actions.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form strong relationships with the childminder and with other children. They are happy and have a positive sense of belonging. This supports their emotional needs well. Children develop positive attitudes to their health and well-being and spend lots of time outdoors. For example, they practice the skill of manoeuvring themselves on a swing, play hopscotch and visit many places of interest. Children learn to take calculated risks and engage in safe practices as the childminder is a good role model for children. For example, children show increasing confidence with a knife as they cut up snacks and have a good awareness of potential hazards.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and enthusiastic learners who show good levels of concentration and interest. For example, they experiment mixing lard with seeds to create a bird feeder. Children enthusiastically demonstrate how this does not fall out of the pot when turned upside down. Children enjoy using letter sounds and experiment with marks. Children demonstrate good social skills and independence, for example, they wash their hands, put their shoes on and help others. Children gain good skills in preparation for their future learning and for school.
