This provision is good

 Children make good progress in their learning. They are well supported by the childminder and get involved in lots of different activities. For example, children really enjoy looking at their favourite books and use the illustrations to help them tell the story.  Children build lovely relationships with the childminder. Children are positive and kind and share space and resources while they play.  The childminder is dedicated to the development of her setting. She evaluates children's play well and makes improvements which have a positive impact on children's experiences.  The childminder communicates well with parents and other settings, and has built strong and effective relationships. Children benefit from a shared understanding of their needs and continuity of their care.  The childminder uses her local area well to teach children about their local community. Children socialise with other children and adults, and learn to develop respect for them.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not have enough opportunities to explore a range of materials or use these to represent their ideas.  The childminder does not consistently plan effective opportunities for children to develop their early writing skills.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide more opportunities for children to explore different media and materials to support their developing creativity  extend opportunities for children to explore early writing to support their developing literacy skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children.  The inspector looked at documentation, including the childminder's safeguarding policy.  The inspector conducted a leadership and management meeting and a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder understands child protection issues and safeguarding procedures and has had training to support her practice. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder successfully identifies training programmes that have a positive impact on the experiences she provides for children. For example, she has recently learnt about tracking children's progress and identifying any gaps in development. This helps her plan effectively to help children catch up when necessary. The childminder evaluates children's play effectively. She makes focused improvements which promote their learning. For example, the childminder has introduced a bird feeder to the garden and children happily identify different species from the window and improve their understanding of living things.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is skilled at encouraging children to solve problems. For example, children build tunnels with tubes and blocks, and the childminder helps them think about how to get a variety of different sized toy cars to fit through them. The childminder provides resources that encourage children to explore new mathematical ideas. For example, children make a pretend jam sandwich with bricks and are encouraged to think about pattern and shape while they play. Children are confident and play well independently. For example, they make up stories about helicopters and trains and use good communication skills and a well-developed vocabulary.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children develop positive social skills and learn to be respectful. For example, the childminder encourages children to use good table manners. Children sit nicely when they eat and learn to say 'thank you' before they get down. Children learn about staying healthy and think about the foods that are good for them. They get lots of exercise and fresh air. Children improve their physical skills through activities such as running and balancing in the garden and go on lots of local visits to the woods. Children are confident and settled. They happily go to the childminder when they are worn out or in need of reassurance.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are content and involved. They take part in a variety of activities which improve their knowledge and understanding of the world. For example, they find a hibernating hedgehog and learn about its needs. Children are continually praised for their efforts and thrive in a positive and kind environment. Children concentrate and persevere while they play, and they use skills which will help them as they move on to school.
