This provision is good

 Children get involved in a range of interesting learning experiences. They develop positive skills that will help them at school and make good progress from their starting points.  Children are positive and kind. They build lovely relationships with the childminder. Children are respectful and considerate and behave consistently well.  The childminder has put procedures in place which help him effectively consider the quality of the setting, and he makes well-targeted improvements. This has a positive impact on outcomes for children.  The childminder has built strong and effective relationships with parents and other professionals. Children enjoy a coordinated approach to their care and learning requirements, and this promotes their emotional well-being.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 On occasion, the childminder misses opportunities to encourage and support children in their early attempts to use and understand numbers.  The childminder does not plan as effectively as possible to support and help children to develop their hand control.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 make better use of opportunities that arise to further support and extend children's ability to use and understand numbers  review and enhance the opportunities available for children to improve their hand control.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children.  The inspector conducted a leadership and management meeting with the childminder.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at documentation, including children's learning journals.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder implements effective safeguarding procedures and understands how to protect children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder effectively identifies training programmes which have a positive impact on his understanding of the different ways in which children learn. For example, the childminder understands that children's play is an important vehicle for promoting their progress, and plans well for children's next steps. The childminder successfully evaluates his setting and makes focused and well- considered improvements. For example, he has built a raised vegetable plot in the garden and children enjoy growing and cooking their own produce. The childminder effectively monitors children's learning. This helps him successfully identify and plan for children's individual developmental requirements.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder is skilled at supporting children's individual interests. For example, children love trains and the childminder helps them make up a story about a long and dangerous journey. Children happily use their imaginations and develop an understanding of character and plot. The childminder is skilled at engaging children in conversation and this extends and develops their communication skills. For example, children enjoy talking about trains and the childminder introduces new words and concepts such as 'de-railing' and using 'steam as fuel'. The childminder provides experiences and opportunities that develop children's understanding of living things. For example, children feed the birds and notice their similarities and differences.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are polite and considerate and use a range of positive social skills. For example, they sit nicely at the table when they eat and learn to say 'please' and 'thank you'. The childminder encourages children to develop a respect for others, for example, as they eat together and discuss their morning or family news. Children get lots of exercise and fresh air. They go on a variety of local visits and walks and improve their physical skills as they negotiate slopes and climb trees in the woods.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are confident and settled while they explore. They enjoy activities that develop their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. For example, children talk confidently about hibernating hedgehogs and can explain the qualities of magnets. Children have a positive attitude towards learning and use skills which will help them as they move on to school.
