She has effective settling-in procedures to ensure that children are supported well with their move from home. Children are treated as part of the family and she has a close partnership with parents. The childminder makes very good use of the local environment to develop children's learning. For example, they enjoy visiting nearby parks and they are taken on outings further afield, such as museums, animal parks and stately homes. This helps them to learn about the world around them. Inspection activities
The inspector spoke to the children and the childminder at appropriate times. She observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder. The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and of the suitability of all those living on the premises. The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including children's learning records and policies and procedures. The inspector took account of parents' views through documents left with the childminder.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder understands her responsibilities with regard to child protection and attends regular training. She is aware of current legislation and updates her polices accordingly. The childminder has a secure knowledge about who to contact should she have concerns about a child's welfare. She makes regular and detailed checks of children's learning and development. This includes the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years. This helps the childminder to plan effective next steps in their learning. The childminder shares these observations and assessments with parents. She includes information about children's learning at home in her planning. The childminder has built relationships with other settings children attend, such as nursery. This helps her to share information about children's learning effectively and promotes partnership working.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder understands how children learn through play. She is skilled at following the children's lead and enhancing their self-chosen experiences. The childminder has an effective balance of flexible, planned activities which are based on children's interests. For example, an interest in construction leads to children making models of their own choice. The childminder plays alongside children, introducing new words and ideas, such as different types of houses that people may live in. She also skilfully introduces early mathematical understanding. For example, they discuss the different shaped bricks they may need to build their houses. Children enjoy watching wildlife in the garden. They talk to the childminder about the bird food that they have made and discuss who has come to eat this. The childminder organises baking and craft activities, these are some opportunities she provides to further support children's hand-to-eye coordination.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children show that they feel settled and secure with the attentive childminder. She regularly praises children for their efforts and they willingly help with small tasks. She manages their behaviour positively and models good manners consistently. This helps children to understand boundaries and expectations, consequently they are well behaved. They follow good hygiene routines and are provided with nutritious meals. Children are provided with plenty of opportunities for exercise and fresh air. They learn about keeping safe during their play, routines and outings. The childminder ensures that her risk assessments contribute to keeping children safe.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children are very busy and engaged in their play. Children concentrate well and persevere on completing tasks. They make good progress across all areas of learning. The childminder understands how to support children to be prepared for their eventual move on to school. They are helped to be emotionally ready for the next stage in their learning. Children develop good communication skills and they have easy access to books to help support early reading.
