This provision is outstanding

 Children make excellent progress across all areas of learning. They enjoy a range of very exciting activities and are eager to join in and very motivated to learn. For example, they visit an allotment, grow their own vegetables, collect chicken's eggs and learn about the needs of living things.  Children use impressive communication skills, and their social skills are extremely well developed. Children are very positive and thoughtful towards each other and have wonderful relationships with the childminder.  The childminder very successfully considers and continuously improves her setting. She implements extremely positive changes that really benefit children. This has a great impact on their experiences and development.  The childminder has built real and very strong relationships with parents and other settings. Parents are highly appreciative of the care their children receive and the progress they make.

 continue to improve the already excellent provision for those children who prefer to play and learn outdoors.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children across the setting and on a local visit to the woods.  The inspector spoke with children and took the written views of parents into account.  The inspector looked at documentation, including the childminder's paediatric first-aid certificate.  The inspector conducted a leadership and management meeting and a joint observation with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

The childminder implements excellent safeguarding procedures and fully understands how to protect children's welfare. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder successfully identifies training programmes that have a very positive impact on her understanding of children's needs. For example, she has recently learnt about the importance of building strong bonds with children and, in particular, how to support children who are learning English as an additional language. This has helped her tailor her approach carefully and specifically for each child. The childminder skilfully evaluates children's experiences and makes well-considered and focused improvements. For example, children are able to select and return resources which are carefully labelled according to their age and ability. This helps to improve children's independence and they gain excellent early reading skills in readiness for school. The childminder plans to improve her setting further by developing

an 'outdoor classroom' in her garden. The childminder monitors children's learning continuously and effectively, and she plans specifically for their future learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

The childminder is highly skilled at supporting and extending children's literacy development. For example, children happily mix mud with water from the river and learn to write their names on tree trunks with the mixture. The childminder provides experiences that are incredibly well selected with children's stage of development in mind. For example, children negotiate and solve problems as they transport branches and build dens together. The childminder regularly uses exciting outdoor learning environments, such as the woods and allotment, and children are extremely eager to explore. For example, they identify insects and plants and are really excited when they discover a sleeping ladybird.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

The childminder encourages children to develop incredibly positive social skills. For example, older children help younger children get ready to go outside and carefully hold their boots and coats while they wriggle into them. Children improve their physical skills through activities such as digging up roots, carrying logs, and climbing down banks to the river. Children learn to play together extremely well. They consistently respect each other's feelings and happily take turns.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

Children are extremely motivated while they play. They are completely engaged and very settled and happy. Children enjoy activities that help them develop an impressive understanding of the world around them. For example, they stand silently in the woods and are completely enthralled when they hear and identify the sound of a woodpecker.
