This provision is good

 The childminder has swiftly addressed the issues raised at the last inspection. His assistant has undertaken a first-aid qualification and can now provide appropriate care for children if they have an accident.  The childminder provides a warm and welcoming home where children are happy to play and learn. Children have a strong emotional bond with the childminder and even those new to the setting are quickly learning routines and boundaries.  Partnerships with parents are good. The childminder uses a variety of ways to encourage parents to share information about children's routines, preferences and care needs. He keeps parents fully informed of children's progress. This helps them support children's learning at home.  The childminder observes children and tracks their development effectively. These help him to plan activities that challenge children and support them achieve their next steps in learning.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder does not always target his training and professional development to focus on building particular skills and raising the quality of his teaching even further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 apply a more targeted approach to professional development to strengthen existing teaching skills and knowledge further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of local reporting procedures should he have a concern about a child in his care. He ensures the home is as safe as possible and when out and about, takes precautions to keep children safe. For example, children wear bright, fluorescent tabards when walking to and from school. The childminder has good recording procedures in place to document any accidents or existing injuries children may have. Children practise the emergency evacuation procedure regularly and, consequently, they know what to do if the fire alarm is activated. When working with an assistant, the childminder ensures she is familiar with daily routines, learning and care needs of children present. Self-evaluation is used to reflect on good practice and identify some areas where improvements are needed.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy the company of the childminder and delight in the attention they receive as they play happily together. They, particularly, like playing simple board games where they learn to take turns and follow instructions. Children are able to identify and match pictures on their cards and attempt to name the animals illustrated. Children concentrate well on their chosen activities and show an ability to be able to puzzle things out for themselves. For example, children persevere in finding the correct piece to complete a colourful egg- box activity. The childminder extends children's learning outside of the home effectively. Visits to local groups, play areas and the seaside all help to widen children's experiences from a young age.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder provides a range of good quality toys and activities to interest children of all ages. Since the last inspection, he has improved the range of learning opportunities available in the garden. This complements the visits to the local park and daily walks in the community where children can practise their physical skills and enjoy exercise in the fresh air. Children's good health is further supported by nutritious snacks which help them develop healthy choices from the start. Children play well together and show consideration and kindness towards their younger friends. When necessary, the childminder offers timely reminders about appropriate behaviours. Due to his gentle manner and diligence, children soon understand what they can and cannot do.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are learning to be independent in their self-care needs and can follow the daily routines with confidence. They make good progress from their starting points and are keen to join in with adult-led games or investigate toys by themselves. Children are beginning to develop the attitudes and skills needed for their next stage in learning.
