This provision is good

 The childminder has a secure understanding of the requirements, which she implements very well in her service to children and parents.  The childminder has a good understanding of how children learn through play. The childminder and her assistant complement each other well to engage children in a broad range of stimulating activities indoors and outdoors.  The childminder regularly informs parents about their children's daily experiences.  Children have formed strong relationships with the childminder and her assistant. This helps children settle well, be confident, behave well and make good progress in their development.  The childminder strives to make improvements in her service. She evaluates and monitors different aspects of her service to identify any gaps or weaknesses and build on strengths.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder does not recognise when children become slightly distracted during activities, such as due to background noise and effects from the television.  The childminder is still developing her systems to share further information with parents as part of the assessments she undertakes of children's learning.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 enhance children's opportunities to focus and concentrate fully on activities, in particular, by reducing any unnecessary noise and distractions  continue to extend on the range of information shared with parents as part of reviewing their children's progress and ongoing assessments.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector held discussions with the childminder and her assistant, and talked to children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector and the childminder observed the children as they played.  The inspector observed a range of indoor and outdoor learning activities, and mealtimes.  The inspector discussed and looked at documentation used as part of the childminder's self-evaluation systems and written feedback from parents.  The inspector looked at a sample of required records, policies and procedures, and children's assessment records.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder is aware of her responsibility to act on any concerns about a child's welfare. She offers ongoing support to her assistant, which ensures they work as a strong team to ensure children are supported effectively in their care and development. The childminder has a strong capacity to maintain continuous improvement. For example, she pursues training opportunities to improve her teaching skills, which she shares with her assistant. She welcomes the support of the local authority and seeks out parental feedback to help improve the service on offer. She has met weaknesses identified at the previous inspection well, for example, planning effectively for children's next steps in learning and supporting language development further. The childminder maintains all required records; this includes assessing the suitability of her assistant.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder uses effective teaching techniques. She plans and provides activities to reflect her observational assessments and children's interests. The childminder ensures children receive appropriate levels of support to make good levels of progress. Children of varied ages and abilities play well alongside each other and the childminder skilfully adapts activities to ensure all can benefit. She provides children with opportunities to use their own ideas and imagination, such as when children play with toy rockets and aeroplanes.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children are happy and settled in the childminder's care, they present a strong bond with the childminder as she settles them well in her care. The childminder plans mealtimes well, where children learn to socialise with others and receive a range of healthy and nutritious food. Outdoor play at the setting and during outings is part of the children's daily routine, where they receive good support from the childminder to develop their physical skills. Children learn about responsible behaviour with effective support from the childminder. The childminder has developed links with the local nursery to help her support children in their individual development. Children develop a strong awareness of each other. For example, as they learn to share toys or gather as a group to play.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children make good progress from when they start. They gain the necessary skills needed in preparation for school. For example, they learn to be independent, such as making choices in their play, exploring early writing and language skills, and problem solving.
