Previous inspection: Requires Improvement

Effectiveness of the leadership and management Requires improvement Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Requires improvement Personal development, behaviour and welfare Requires improvement Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision requires improvement. It is not yet good because:

 The childminder does not promote the communication and language skills of two-year- old children well enough.  The childminder has not put enough emphasis on her professional development. She has not considered how to strengthen her teaching skills and deepen her understanding of the early years foundation stage, in order to drive improvement.  The childminder does not do enough to help children to learn about good hygiene practice.  The childminder does not give some parents the support they need to guide their children's learning successfully at home.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder and her assistant provide a nurturing and homely environment for children. They are caring and affectionate towards them. Children demonstrate that they feel safe and secure in their company.  The childminder and her assistant provide appropriate praise and encouragement and help children to feel good about themselves. Children explore their environment freely and demonstrate good levels of confidence, boosting their emotional well-being.  The childminder and her assistant are good role models and help children to learn to share, take turns and treat others with respect. Children behave well.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

p.2

Due Date

 improve the educational programme for two-year-old children, so they benefit from good quality teaching and make consistently good progress in their communication and language development 31/05/2017

p.2

Due Date

 implement a programme of professional development that ensures children are provided with quality learning and development experiences that continually improve. 31/05/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 provide more opportunities for children to learn about good hygiene practices  give all parents the support they need to successfully guide their children's learning at home.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed all areas of the home used for childminding and the toys and resources available. She observed activities and reviewed the quality of teaching.  The inspector looked at a range of documents and discussed the childminder's self- evaluation.  The inspector checked evidence of the childminder's qualifications and the suitability of all adults living and working on the premises.  The inspector carried out an evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector spoke to parents, children and the childminder's assistant at appropriate times during the inspection and took account of their views.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management requires improvement

The childminder has made some progress since her last inspection to address the actions and recommendations. She has had support from the local authority which has resulted in some improvements. The childminder now plans activities that are more appropriate to children's needs. She supervises her assistant and ensures that he accesses appropriate training to continue to develop his knowledge and skills. However, she has not given enough thought to her own professional development. Her teaching has not improved enough to secure children's good progress over time. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have a good knowledge of the possible signs of abuse or neglect and what action to take in response.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

Teaching is not of a consistently good standard. The childminder has started to use an online system to help her monitor the progress children make. She is aware of what children can do and what they need to learn next. However, her teaching skills have not improved sufficiently to secure children's good progress. She does not take enough account of what children can already do and often fails to build on this in her interactions with them. The childminder does not consistently support two-year-old children to make the next steps in their communication and language development. She does not use good teaching strategies to help them build on their speaking and listening skills. As a result, two-year-old children are not making good enough progress in this aspect of their development. However, children are supported to learn some new things. They use their senses as they investigate textures, such as play dough and pasta. Babies explore their

environment freely. The childminder encourages them to repeat their actions to consolidate their learning. However, she has not made sure that all parents benefit from good support to help them guide their children's learning.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare require improvement

The weakness in teaching means that children's personal development is not supported well enough to secure their good progress. However, the childminder does obtain information from parents about children's care routines and shares information about their day. She helps children to settle into their new environment and supports their emotional well-being positively. Children enjoy healthy snacks which include pieces of fruit. They spend time outdoors and go on a variety of outings. The childminder uses these occasions to help children to be physically active and learn to interact in different situations. However, the childminder does not give children the consistent support they need to learn about the benefits of good hygiene practices.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Children are not making consistently good progress. Although, two-year-old children are confident and eager to learn, they are not supported well enough in their learning and to make the best possible progress. However, children are emotionally secure and the activities on offer do help them make steady progress in gaining skills they need for the next stage in their learning and the eventual move to school.
