This provision is good

 Children are very settled and secure in the care of the childminder who is kind and thoughtful towards the children.  The childminder creates a stimulating, safe environment for the children in which to explore and learn. For example, children are able to make choices about their play. Children show they feel happy in her care.  Children make good progress from their starting points. The childminder plans a range of activities that reflects the children's interests. The children show good levels of concentration, for example, as they paint pictures.  The childminder has successful partnerships with other professionals. She shares important information with other provisions, which ensures children's individual learning experiences are consistent and relevant.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Sometimes, the childminder does make full use of the outdoor area to enhance learning opportunities for children.  The childminder's evaluations systems are in their developing stages and do not currently include parents' and children's suggestions to help improve her service to families further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend opportunities for children to explore the outdoor environment to broaden their learning as much as possible  increase opportunities to include and use parents' ideas to help develop the childcare provision even further.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector and childminder discussed the systems she uses to observe and record children's progress, and the documents she uses to support her work.  The inspector looked at the rooms and resources the children use.  The inspector completed observations of the children as they engaged in activities with the childminder.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her child protection responsibilities. She knows how to recognise the signs and symptoms that may alert her to any welfare concerns and how to report these to appropriate agencies. The childminder reviews her practice and reflects on ways to improve her childcare service. For example, she seeks suitable training opportunities to ensure she remains up to date with her childcare knowledge. In general, the childminder has good partnerships with parents. For example, she talks to them about their children's daily learning and welfare experiences. The childminder knows the children well and uses her knowledge to assess their progress and to identify any areas where extra support may be needed. Her successful planning and teaching helps to close any gaps in their learning.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder arranges activities to challenge and motivate the children to learn. For example, she knows the children like painting and drawing and ensures resources to support these activities are accessible. Children confidently talk about the colours they are using to create their picture and, with considered support, carefully write their name on their creation. They excitedly talk about taking it home to show their parents. Children are developing their listening skills and understand how to make choices. For example, they think carefully about the fruits they would like to eat for snack time and foods for lunch. Children use their imagination well, such as when making shapes and pictures with chalks. Children happily sing as they play and learn.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children form secure emotional attachments to the childminder. The childminder uses different approaches, such as games, to help the children learn about sharing and showing kindness. For example, she shows the children how to roll a ball to one another and to take turns. Children are delighted when the balls roll back to them. The childminder helps children to manage their behaviour. For example, she distracts them from unwanted behaviour by offering alternatives. Children receive lots of praise, which helps motivate them to have a positive attitude to learning. The children have good opportunities to learn about others in the community. For example, they visit local toddler groups and shops where they select foods for special events.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children have good opportunities to use their words. For example, they describe how they are feeling and make choices. Children are confident and are developing the skills they will need for their next steps in learning and eventual move to school.
