p.1

This provision is good

 Children have fun, behave well and enjoy the activities on offer. They make consistently good progress in their learning and development.  Children use good communication skills. They share, take turns and act in a kind and respectful way. Children build lovely relationships with the childminder and settle easily.  The childminder continuously improves her setting and implements changes that have a positive impact on children's experiences. For example, they grow vegetables, collect chicken's eggs at an allotment and learn about the needs of living things.  The childminder has built firm and effective relationships with parents and her local school. This helps children receive a joined-up understanding of their care and learning requirements.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 At times, the childminder caries out simple tasks for children that they could manage themselves. This does not help them to improve their self-help skills.  Overall, children use positive social skills but the childminder sometimes misses good opportunities that arise to extend these further.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 develop further the support for children to become independent and gain their self-help skills  make better use of opportunities that arise to further support and extend children's social skills.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder's interactions with children across the setting.  The inspector conducted a leadership and management discussion with the childminder.  The inspector conducted a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector looked at documentation including the safeguarding policy.  The inspector spoke with children and took the written views of parents into consideration.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has attended training and understands safeguarding procedures and child protection issues. She identifies and attends training programmes which are beneficial to children. For example, the childminder has developed her knowledge to help her support children who have specific special educational needs. The childminder is good at watching children's play and adapts her provision to suit their interests. For example, children get involved in elaborate imaginative games after the introduction of new dolls and cots in the role-play area. The childminder assesses children's learning well and plans with their next steps in mind. She uses tracking effectively to identify any gaps in development and adapts her provision to help children make progress.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children have lots of opportunities to follow their own ideas as they play. For example, they improve their number skills as they transport cars on the back of a bicycle, and count them carefully into a toy truck. Children explore and make links in their understanding. For example, they play happily with toy vehicles before the childminder reads a story about a traffic jam. The childminder helps children improve their language skills. For example, children play with the cars in jelly and the childminder is good at introducing new descriptive words into the conversation. Children use tractors in paint. They notice the different patterns they make and the childminder skilfully uses the opportunity to talk with children about shape and size.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

Children have fun and play well together. The childminder is in tune with their emotional needs. For example, she gently encourages children to take part as they tentatively explore new art materials. Children improve their physical skills when they play outdoors. They climb, run and balance with confidence. The childminder provides opportunities that appeal to children's curious nature. For example, they develop their understanding of numbers as they learn to count on a giant outdoor abacus.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children respect each other and treat each other with kindness. They are happy and settled in their play and develop a range of skills which will help them as they move onto school. Children confidently explore and use their senses as they enjoy a wide range of tactile experiences and are excited and engaged as they get involved in activities.
