settings, professionals and agencies known to children and families. This helps to provide a highly focused and consistent approach to meeting the needs of children.  The key-person system is remarkably effective. Children quickly form warm, trusting relationships with staff and choose to spend almost all of their time with their key person. Staff support children's emotional well-being very effectively. This helps children to develop high levels of confidence and self-esteem very quickly.  Staff closely monitor the progress made by children and use their findings to identify ways to enhance their teaching strategies. This helps them to meet the needs of individuals and groups of children extremely well, effectively preparing them for school.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is outstanding

The manager is deeply committed to continuous improvement. She identifies focused and precise ways to enhance practice and improve outcomes for children. Her current priorities include reviewing small-group activities to meet children's needs even more effectively. Arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Staff have excellent knowledge of what to do if they are concerned about a child's welfare. Robust arrangements are in place to supervise the well-qualified staff team. A highly focused programme of mentoring, support and professional development helps staff to build on their skills and enhance their already excellent teaching. The combined skills of the manager and staff help them to provide rich and varied educational programmes that are highly responsive to children's needs.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding

Staff make astute observations of children at play and meticulously plan activities that help to promote their continued learning. They have a sharp focus on children's language and communication skills. For example, they use visual prompts, such as picture cards, to help younger children to make choices, while well-targeted activities help most-able children learn new words very quickly. This contributes to the excellent progress children make in this area of learning. Children explore a range of materials, express their ideas and develop strong exploratory skills. For example, they mix colours and explore textures as they make their own representations on a card. Staff fully understand children's varying learning styles and preferences. For example, boys who do not engage in literacy activities indoors enjoy acting out familiar songs and stories on a large scale in the garden.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

Children's health and well-being are of paramount importance and robust procedures are in place that help to promote these at all times. Staff teach them how to take responsibility for their own health and safety. For example, children practise using cutting tools safely. Staff have superb knowledge of how to manage children's behaviour. Children respond well to sensitive guidance and consistent boundaries. They learn to consider and respect the feelings of others and behave very well. Staff have very high expectations of children and support them to develop independence from a young age. For example, they serve food and clear up spills at snack time. Staff offer children an abundance of praise and encourage them to keep trying when they struggle with tasks. This contributes to their immense sense of pride and the high levels of resilience they demonstrate.

p.3

Outcomes for children are outstanding

Children make excellent progress. Children who are slower to develop key skills benefit from highly focused teaching that helps them to catch up quickly in their learning. They achieve levels of development typical for their age range and are extremely well prepared for the next stage in their learning. Children develop a highly positive attitude. They enjoy their learning and listen and concentrate for increasing lengths of time. For example, young children who are new to the setting quickly engage in group story and song times. Children work together and cooperate during their play. For example, they help one another to carry heavy items and find their own solutions to problems they encounter.
