This provision is good
Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder has a secure knowledge and understanding of how children learn. She develops their thinking and communication skills, for example, by talking to the children clearly and by asking them questions. Children are happy and content in the childminder's home and they are emotionally secure. The childminder has generally built good relationships with the children and their families. Children behave well and their skills develop with increasing confidence. They enjoy being praised for their achievements, such as when tidying the toys away neatly and safely. The childminder provides a welcoming, well-resourced and safe environment. Children are confident to select toys and resources when making choices in their learning. They persevere at tasks for considerable periods of time. The childminder is committed to continuous improvement and to providing good-quality

care and learning. She has a good knowledge of the strengths of her provision and keeps up to date with new guidance and initiatives.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
At times, the childminder does not engage parents sufficiently to help support their children's learning, both in the setting and at home. Occasionally, the childminder misses opportunities to enrich the children's outdoor physical development.
p.1
What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

enhance opportunities for sharing ideas and information with parents to help them support their children's learning, both at the setting and at home explore further ways to involve children in outdoor play to help support their physical development more effectively.
p.2
Inspection activities
The inspector had a tour of the premises and observed the outdoor area. The inspector sampled a range of documentation, including evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises, children's development records, risk assessments and a selection of the childminder's policies and procedures. The inspector observed children engaged in learning activities indoors. The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection. The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. For example, the childminder knows how to meet the children's needs in the event of a child protection concern. She attends training courses to develop her knowledge and skills. She builds meaningful relationships with the children and supports them to learn about other lifestyles and the world around them, for example, during outings into the local community. The childminder supports consistency in children's learning and development, for example, by building strong partnerships with other settings children attend.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
The childminder uses her observations of children at play effectively to assess their development. She uses these observations to plan for their next steps for learning and matches activities to children's interests. For example, she captures younger children's attention as she makes story times interesting and interactive. She supports children's communication, language and literacy development effectively. For example, she helps children to learn about different animals, and to say their names in English and French. The childminder teaches children basic mathematics well, such as when they eagerly sort toys into bigger and smaller groups. Children make marks and patterns with a variety of tools and by using their fingers. They enjoy finding out how things work and they like pressing buttons to make things move in different directions.
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
The childminder helps children to behave well and be polite. She provides them with good support and builds on their emotional well-being, for example, by using ongoing praise. The childminder supports children's good health effectively. She provides children with nutritious snacks and they select their favourite fruit. Children enjoy visiting the local park to develop their awareness of others and the world around them. The childminder teaches children how to be safe. They discuss house rules, such as having respect for each other and not to climb on furniture.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
All children develop important skills to aid their future learning and their eventual move to school. They learn to dress and undress independently, and to practise good personal hygiene routines independently. They listen attentively to stories and understand that print carries meaning. Children develop a good understanding of mathematical concepts. For example, they count objects and begin to recognise numbers and shapes. Children learn about the natural world, such as when planting and growing flowers.
