p.1

This provision is good

 The well-qualified childminder takes children on a range of exciting outings that reflects their interests, such as visits to a local farm. Children learn how to keep themselves safe as they enjoy rides in a cart, pulled by a tractor and also watch lambs being born. They travel on public transport to visit interactive museums to help introduce them to new technology.  Children are very happy and demonstrate that they feel exceptionally secure in the care of the childminder and her assistant. They both form superb, warm relationships with children. For example, children proudly present the models they make to the childminder. Children show very high levels of self-confidence and motivation in activities.  The childminder is committed to continually developing her practice to improve outcomes for all children. Her thorough self-evaluation ensures that strengths and areas for improvement are effectively identified and acted upon.

p.1

This provision is good

 The childminder promotes children's communication and language development very well. For example, she encourages older children to use complex sentences and consistently describes what she is doing to help babies make links between words and actions.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Although the childminder obtains some useful information from parents when children first attend, her questions are not sharply focused to fully support her initial identification of children's precise learning needs.  The childminder has not yet considered rich and varied opportunities for children to express their interest in people who are familiar to them.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 extend the level of initial information obtained from parents to include further detail of children's development, in order to plan more precisely for their continued progress from an early stage  enrich opportunities for children to express their interest of people who are familiar to them.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder and her assistant. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided and reviewed the childminder's self-evaluation.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder and her assistant have an extensive understanding of possible signs that could indicate that children are at risk of harm. They know how to take swift action in order to protect children's welfare in the event of a child protection concern. The childminder manages her assistant's performance through informal supervision meetings. Training needs are identified and there is strong commitment to continuous professional development. The childminder attends regular training and shares good practice with a close network of other childminder's and her assistant. Recent support from the childminder has enhanced her assistant's skills in adapting activities for babies. The childminder carefully reviews children's development to ensure that any gaps in their learning are swiftly identified. Parents describe the childminder as kind and very professional.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children demonstrate perseverance as they learn to solve problems during their chosen play. They work out, through trial and error, how to rotate the lid of a toy teapot for it to fit in place. Children use their vivid imaginations to pretend to make their favourite meals using toy food and kitchen equipment. The childminder introduces children to mathematical ideas in a fun and engaging way. For example, children carefully push different lengths of dried spaghetti into their moulded ball of dough. They count how many circular shaped cereals they have threaded on the spaghetti. Children make predictions about what will happen if they cover the whole length of spaghetti with the cereal. They positively respond to the childminder and her assistant's use of questioning to challenge their thinking. Babies explore the texture of dough and pasta with their hands, and smile with delight as they shake the pasta in the container to create different sounds.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are outstanding

Superb settling-in procedures are in place to help children to feel secure and build strong relationships with others. Children behave exceptionally well. They happily share toys and activities and thrive in carrying out age-appropriate responsibilities. The childminder and her assistant are outstanding role models. Children consistently use excellent manners and enjoy a very healthy lifestyle. The childminder plans exceptional opportunities for children to develop their strength and stamina. For example, children learn to play tennis and develop good balancing skills as they have a go at pushing themselves along wearing roller skates. The childminder encourages babies to stand and hold her hands as they practise to walk independently. Older children demonstrate an excellent understanding of the effect of exercise on their body.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are making good progress in their learning given their starting points. They are very inquisitive and ask authorised visitors questions. Children concentrate for long periods of time given their young age and are beginning to write their own name. These are just some of the skills that help to prepare children well for their next stage of learning and their eventual move on to school.
