p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder does not ensure that the arrangements for transporting children in a vehicle are appropriate to maintain their safety.  The childminder does not always make effective use of assessments to track children's progress to quickly identify any gaps in their learning.  The childminder does not regularly review her provision to enable her to identify key weaknesses.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder promotes children's emotional well-being successfully and has a warm relationship with the children, who are extremely happy and settled in her company.  The playroom is planned well to enable children to select play materials of their choice and independently develop their own ideas. The childminder offers children a wide range of resources to offer challenge and variety in their play.  Children's behaviour is very good. The childminder provides children with a good role model and she speaks in a calm and respectful manner. Children learn about good behaviours and how to use their manners, share and take turns. This also helps them to learn about the needs of others.  Children make decisions about their play and learning in a very thoughtfully organised home environment and easy access to a good range of resources. This has a positive impact on children's learning, development and well-being.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage the provider must:

 ensure appropriate arrangements are in place to transport children in a vehicle safely. 14/02/2017

p.2

Due Date

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

Due Date

 make more-effective use of assessments to accurately track children's progress to quickly identify any gaps in their learning, so that they are best supported to make good progress  strengthen the evaluation of the setting to accurately identify areas for further development to secure continuous improvement.

p.2

Inspection activities

 We carried out this inspection as a result of a risk assessment, following information we received about the provider.  The inspector viewed the premises during the inspection and observed the outdoor play space.  The inspector observed a range of learning activities in the playroom.  The inspector spoke to the childminder and children at appropriate times during the inspection.  The inspector looked at a range of documentation, including evidence of the suitability of adults living on the premises and children's records. She also discussed the childminder's policies and procedures and looked at the childminder's qualifications and training certificates.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective. The childminder failed to ensure children are provided with suitable car seats when transporting them in a vehicle. This means children's safety is compromised. The childminder's systems for self-evaluation are not robust enough to help her identify and address the weaknesses in her practice. Nevertheless, the childminder has a good knowledge of safeguarding legislation. She is well qualified and has a good level of training which she uses to promote the best outcomes for all children in the future. She regularly updates her skills through attending training so that she can support children with additional learning needs. The childminder's home is secure. She risk assesses the environment and completes checks daily to minimise any hazards. Partnerships with parents work well to ensure children's needs are met. The childminder regularly exchanges information with parents about how well their

children are progressing. She talks to them about ways in which they can support their children's learning at home, such as reading books, to help promote their language development further.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

Children enjoy a wide range of stimulating activities which engages and motivates them to learn and develop. The childminder generally uses her observations to carefully plan individual children's learning. This ensures children make good progress in their learning in readiness for school. Children develop good mathematical skills and like to count during play. They learn to recognise colours and shapes as they paint with rollers. Children enjoy the involvement of the childminder in their play and she makes learning fun. She takes every opportunity to extend their learning through her good teaching strategies. They become absorbed in activities they enjoy, such as pretending to make the lunch of the childminder and visitor. Children love to listen to their favourite stories. They join in, pointing to familiar characters and talking about what is happening in the story.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Weaknesses in leadership and management mean that children's welfare is not assured. However, children settle quickly and form close relationships with the childminder who is attentive to their care needs. The childminder promotes children's health, teaching them about sound personal hygiene routines. She also provides healthy snacks and ensures children have access to drinks throughout the day. Children are physically active as they attend groups and walk to the park, enjoying fresh air and exercise regularly. Children learn about keeping themselves safe. As they play the childminder reminds them about why they should not run indoors. The childminder gives children plenty of attention and praise which boosts their self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children develop the skills and confidence they need for their future success and for starting school. Children's early reading and mathematical skills are emerging very successfully. They are confident and keen to do things for themselves. Children develop good social skills, learn about the needs of others and the wider community. They are well prepared for their next stage in learning.
