This provision is good

 The childminder follows effective observation, assessment and planning procedures, and monitors children's development well. She skilfully engages children in a good range of activities to successfully support their learning and good progress.  Effective partnerships with parents and other settings enable the childminder to meet the individual needs of children well. The childminder communicates effectively with others to support good continuity of care and learning for children.  The childminder is effective in her self-evaluation to identify her strengths and areas to develop further. She successfully encourages parents to share their views and ideas, and they work together well to extend children's experiences.  Children benefit from the childminder's nurturing care and attention. The childminder has a good knowledge of children's individual backgrounds, which she reflects well in her provision to help all children learn and achieve.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder sometimes misses learning opportunities within her daily routine to further encourage children's independence and to extend their early understanding of mathematics.  On occasion, the childminder suggests another activity before children have time to finish what they are doing, which distracts children in their play and concentration.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 increase the opportunities during daily routines to further encourage children's independence and extend their understanding in early mathematics  enable children to have sufficient time to finish an activity before starting another, to further support their good concentration.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the childminder and children in their indoor and outdoor activities.  The inspector held discussions with the childminder and sampled children's development records.  The inspector read the childminder's self-evaluation form and feedback from parents.  The inspector viewed safety of the premises.  The inspector checked required documentation, including training and insurance certificates.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder has made good improvements since her last inspection, which include additional outdoor equipment to increase children's sensory play experiences. The childminder has improved her assessment procedures to more clearly identify children's starting points. This enables her to increase her support to children through more thorough planning. The childminder evaluates her training well to improve her practice. This has led her to provide more numerals displayed in the play areas to help children recognise numbers and count. The childminder amended cooking activities, to give children a better understanding of healthier options. For example, they make more savoury things than sweet. Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge and awareness of child protection procedures to safeguard children's welfare.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder provides effective challenges to children in their activities. For example, to support literacy development, the childminder shows children a list of ingredients that they need to weigh. Toddlers stir the oil, water and paint with intent, and enjoy the sensory experience in kneading the mixture. They watch and listen to the childminder and older children with interest, which supports their learning well. The childminder skilfully encourages children's communication and language development, especially for children who are learning more than one language. The childminder works closely with parents to learn words in their home languages and how to pronounce them. Older children practise different types of scripts and learn about other cultures.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder uses pictures and photographs to good effect, such as to help younger children make choices in what they play with. Children develop good self-esteem. They show pride and pleasure in their achievements and discoveries. For example, toddlers smile with delight as they dig up carrots. The childminder extends their knowledge of food well, providing exotic fruits for them to try. Children thoroughly enjoy outdoor play. They learn about nature and confidently recall seeing frogs in the pond. Children behave well and respond promptly to the childminder's instructions, which keep them safe.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are very happy and feel safe in the childminder's care. They form good friendships and secure relationships, which support their emotional development well. Children show a keen interest in learning and readily join in. For example, they are eager to help make 'mud dough', which provides an interesting material for them to experience. Children make good progress and develop the skills they need for future learning.
