This provision is good

 The childminder has addressed all of the issues raised at the last inspection. She monitors children's progress and plans activities which extend their understanding and help them make good progress in their development. Babies are making appropriate progress in developing early physical and communication skills.  The childminder uses her knowledge of children's interests and abilities to plan an interesting range of activities. This supports their development by building on what they can do and making learning fun. She provides constant conversation and introduces new words and praises to aid their early communication and social skills.  Parents describe the childminder as very caring. They are very happy with the service their children receive and the home-from-home environment the childminder provides.  The childminder has very warm relationships with children who are inquisitive and bright. She reacts promptly to their physical needs for rest, refreshment and comfort

which means they are ready to access learning opportunities. She provides a broad range of play resources which she carefully selects to provide children with fresh challenges.  The childminder provides an environment that is well organised and well equipped. She regularly reviews her risk assessments taking into account the ages and abilities of the children she is caring for. She has clear plans in place to manage the presence of pets.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 The childminder is not currently accessing targeted professional development to continue to improve her ongoing knowledge of child development and enhance her teaching skills.

p.1

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.  The inspector took account of the views of parents through written feedback provided.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

The childminder takes parents and children's views into consideration when planning improvements to her service. She uses daily diary sheets to help ensure parents are well informed about the type of activities children undertake and any care issues. Parents are also informed about how they can support their child's learning at home. The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibilities in protecting children from harm. She is very clear about what signs would concern her and where she needs to go for advice.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder has previously undertaken a qualification and uses this knowledge when planning learning opportunities for children. She regularly assesses children's progress and identifies areas where she needs to support their learning. Younger children's activities provide opportunities for them to develop their physical and social skills. The childminder understands that everyday play can be adapted to expand children's understanding and skills. Children who enjoy making sounds are provided with opportunities to use household objects, such as saucepans and wooden spoons. The childminder shows them how to tap out rhythms and develop their physical coordination. The childminder supports children's language development well. She interprets older babies' needs effectively as they communicate through gestures and some first sounds. She talks to children, explains what is happening, sings songs and talks about picture books. This builds on their

understanding and gives them time to hear and practise new words.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder praises the children's achievements and supports them to understand how to behave appropriately. The close relationship they build with the childminder means their emotional well-being is well supported. The childminder ensures children develop a good understanding of healthy lifestyles by providing opportunities for regular exercise. They also develop an understanding, appropriate to their age, of the importance of a balanced diet to promote good health. The childminder has good relationships with parents and works with them to ensure children's emotional and practical needs are well supported. She follows parents' wishes for example, supporting baby-lead weaning.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children settle into a new environment with confidence. They are enthusiastic learners, who are very keen to join in with activities and they learn the key skills needed for their move on to primary education. Children are making expected progress in all areas of learning and are working comfortably within the range of development typical for their age. Children are gaining skills in independence as they move around the environment with confidence. They watch carefully as new toys are introduced and enthusiastically imitate and experiment to see what they can do. Babies are enjoying learning to communicate. They babble and sing happily as they experiment with learning to speak. They practise new physical skills, learning to manipulate objects, stand and take a few tentative steps.
