Outcomes for children Requires improvement

p.1

This provision is inadequate

 The childminder does not have a suitable understanding of her role and responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children. She does not have effective policies and procedures in place to safeguard children.  Some documentation is not available for inspection. The childminder does not maintain a record each time medication is administered or keep an accurate record of accidents.  Children's hours of attendance are not recorded as required.  The childminder does not consistently use observation and assessment effectively enough to help her plan and provide good quality learning experiences for children or identify where there are gaps in children's learning. In addition, she does not have a good enough understanding of how to carry out the progress check for children aged between two and three years.

p.1

It has the following strengths

 The childminder is kind and caring and children form close bonds with her. She supports their emotional development. Children are settled and happy in the childminder's welcoming home.  Positive relationships are established with parents. The childminder speaks to parents regularly and uses a daily diary to share information effectively. This helps her to provide consistency of care for children.  Children are eager to play and confidently choose from a suitable range of resources.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To meet the requirements of the early years foundation stage and the Childcare Register the provider must:

p.2

 maintain a daily record of each child's hours of attendance 27/01/2017  improve the observation and assessment procedures, including gaining knowledge about how to conduct the progress check for children between the ages of two and three years, use this information to plan and provide appropriate activities that enable children to make at least good progress. 17/02/2017

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and assessed the impact this has on children's learning.  The inspector completed a joint evaluation of an activity with the childminder.  The inspector held a number of discussions with the childminder. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of persons living in the household.  The inspector spoke to children during the inspection.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is inadequate

Although the childminder is experienced and has attended some relevant training, she has not kept up to date with current good practice. She has not reviewed her practice effectively to ensure the safe and efficient management of the setting. Not all records are available for inspection, including evidence that the childminder holds an appropriate first- aid qualification. Safeguarding is not effective. The childminder is aware of some signs that may raise cause for concern. However, there are gaps in her safeguarding knowledge. She is not familiar with changes to safeguarding guidance and legislation. She does not know the correct procedure to follow in the event of an allegation being made against herself or family member.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment requires improvement

The childminder gathers some information about children's progress by carrying out observations. However, she does not always identify gaps or delays in children's development. As a result, these are not always addressed sufficiently. She does not have a good enough knowledge of the required progress check for all children aged between two and three years. She does not always plan activities effectively enough to help children make at least good progress. Nevertheless, children are generally happy and engaged. The childminder is kind and warm in her interactions with children. She plays alongside children and uses some suitable teaching strategies to promote their learning. For example, she models language focused on colours and numbers as they play. The childminder plans a range of activities to support the development of small-muscle skills. For example, she gives children opportunities to enjoy building with bricks.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are inadequate

Children's well-being is not assured because the childminder does not prioritise children's welfare adequately. She does not record the times children arrive or leave each day. Although she obtains permission from parents before giving medication and keeps parents informed if a child has an accident whilst in her care, she does not follow the correct procedures for consistently recording accidents and administering medication. Children's good health is promoted sufficiently by the childminder. Children have regular opportunities for fresh air and exercise. Children respond well to praise and encouragement as they play. This helps to support children's self-esteem.

p.3

Outcomes for children require improvement

Weaknesses in the childminder's teaching mean that children are not consistently supported to make good progress. However, she does support them to gain the basic skills they need to be ready for school. Early mathematical skills are emerging as children use number language as they play. Children show an interest in books and reading as they share stories with the childminder.
