This provision is good
Staff are well qualified and the overall quality of their teaching is good. They implement a range of appropriate strategies that help children to make progress in their learning. Children's assessment information is reviewed well. The deputy manager identifies any areas where children may require additional help. She works well with external agencies, if appropriate, to develop a joint approach to supporting children's needs. Children behave well in the nursery. Staff help them to develop skills, such as turn- taking and sharing and provide consistent boundaries within the nursery room and outdoor area. Partnerships with the attached children's centre and local schools are strong. The deputy manager works well with other professionals and parents to provide continuity in the care and support children receive when they move from one setting to another. Children's independence skills are fostered well. Staff encourage children to carry out

tasks for themselves and take part in routine activities, such as preparing for snack time.
p.1
It is not yet outstanding because:
Although, overall, children make good progress in their communication development, staff do not always use opportunities well enough to help extend children's vocabulary. Self-evaluation is not sufficiently focused on assessing the impact that current priorities for improvement have on children's outcomes.

What the setting needs to do to improve further
To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

Inspection activities
The inspector observed the quality of teaching during activities indoors and outdoors, and assessed the impact this has on children's learning. The inspector spoke with staff and children during the inspection. The inspector completed a joint observation with the deputy nursery manager. The inspector held a meeting with the deputy nursery manager. She looked at relevant documentation and evidence of the suitability of staff working in the nursery. The inspector spoke to a number of parents during the inspection and took account of their views.
p.2
Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective. Strong emphasis is placed on staff receiving regular updates to keep them abreast of any changes to legislation. Staff confidently describe signs and symptoms of possible abuse to children. They know how to act and who to contact should they have any concerns. Staff are supported well in the nursery by the manager and her deputy. An ongoing cycle of observations of practice is in place and links effectively to regular supervision meetings. This, alongside regular training, helps staff to improve the quality of their teaching. A good overview is maintained of educational activities provided for children. The deputy works alongside staff in the nursery room, gaining first-hand experience of practice and identifying areas for development. This ensures activities provided reflect children's interests and stage of development.
p.3
Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good
Effective systems are in place to observe and assess children's learning. Staff use this information well, overall, to provide activities that challenge children in their learning and promote their progress. Children are provided with good opportunities to explore and investigate. They squeal with delight when they explore cooked pasta, adding additional resources, such as paint and glitter. Staff support children generally well to extend their communication skills, especially those in receipt of funding. They introduce words, such as spiral, when children look closely at the pasta. Parents are encouraged to support their children's learning at home, which helps to consolidate children's understanding. Parents spoken to during the inspection describe how they enjoy sharing information about activities they have carried out at home with their children. Ongoing discussions with staff and regular summaries of learning keep parents updated with the progress their children
p.3
Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good
Children are supported effectively when they begin attending nursery for the first time. Staff work very well with parents, gathering key information to ensure continuity with supporting children's emotional and physical needs. Children quickly establish strong relationships with their key person and other staff. They explore the nursery environment with confidence and show motivation when trying new experiences and activities. Good opportunities are provided to promote children's physical health. Children have healthy meals and snacks and follow positive hygiene routines. They access a stimulating, outdoor environment on a daily basis, enjoying a wide range of experiences that support their learning well.
p.3
Outcomes for children are good
Children make good progress in their learning, developing key skills, such as literacy and mathematics. They demonstrate good listening skills as they join in with the actions and learn the words to songs and rhymes. Children develop an understanding of number when they engage in counting activities to find out how many children are present in nursery. This provides a strong foundation for their future learning when they go to school.
