This provision is good

 The childminder makes effective use of the progress check when children reach two years of age. She recognises where children need extra support and works effectively with other health professionals to ensure children meet their goals.  The childminder monitors the progress of all children effectively. She skilfully uses questions to help children think and improve their problem-solving skills.  The childminder works very well in partnership with other settings, in particular with the pre-school that children attend. This contributes significantly to the continuity of learning for children.  The childminder has a strong partnership with her co-childminder. They share ideas and collaborate well to provide parents with a flexible, caring provision. Children settle very quickly and are eager to attend.  Children behave well and are learning to give and take. This helps to develop their growing independence and awareness of others.

p.1

It is not yet outstanding because:

 Children do not have consistent access to a wide range of tools and resources to fully extend their creative ability in some activities.  The childminder does not reflect effectively on the training she receives to raise her standards to an even higher level.

p.1

What the setting needs to do to improve further

To further improve the quality of the early years provision the provider should:

p.2

What the setting needs to do to improve further

 provide children with more resources during activities to further extend their imagination and creativity  reflect more on the training completed to make the most of all aspects covered on courses.

p.2

Inspection activities

 The inspector viewed the areas of the setting used for childminding.  The inspector undertook a joint observation with the childminder.  The inspector viewed a range of documentation including training, qualifications, children's records and suitability checks.  The inspector took into consideration the written and verbal comments of parents.

p.2

Effectiveness of the leadership and management is good

Safeguarding is effective. The childminder has a good knowledge of child protection issues and understands the procedure to take if concerned about the welfare of a child in her care. The childminder evaluates the service she provides. For example, a course on healthy eating has made an impact on how she records children's dietary needs and on children's understanding of eating well. She regularly shares information with parents about their children's progress and she seeks their views as part of her desire to continuously improve. The childminder implements her policies well and accurately maintains children's health and safety records.

p.3

Quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good

The childminder plans activities around the children's interests. She plans outings to introduce them to a broad range of experiences. For example, children attend singing and dance sessions as well as soft play time. Children develop good control of their limbs in healthy exercise and build a sense of rhythm and time through song. The childminder pursues themes when children return home, such as favourite stories, which children recall with pleasure. The childminder makes good use of children's enthusiasm to develop their thinking in some creative activities. Parents comment how the childminder supports children's language skills well. Parents particularly enjoy viewing the photo albums and having discussions that help to continue their children's learning at home.

p.3

Personal development, behaviour and welfare are good

The childminder is warm and welcoming. She supports children to access a wide range of stimulating and good-quality resources within her home. She understands how children's senses can be stimulated. For example, babies show curiosity as they feel the textures of a carefully prepared selection of natural materials, and older children love the excitement of a dark cube where they experiment with torches. The childminder ensures the home area is safe and she teaches older children to keep safe, particularly when walking to and from pre-school. Children take off their own coats when arriving and make their choices of play activities.

p.3

Outcomes for children are good

Children are working comfortably within expectations for their age and some are exceeding. Where children are working below, the childminder implements effective strategies to rapidly increase their progress. Children are enthusiastic talkers and learn to express their thoughts well. They understand routines and this helps their confidence. Children recognise shapes and confidently count. They make strong friendships that carry on when they leave for entry to school.
